My fiance makes this awesome tofu stir fry -- the tofu is baked in the oven coated in seasoned cornstarch which gets nice and crispy (but with a much better texture than fried tofu IMHO) and also holds sauce really well when you mix everything together. I used to eat vegan a lot because a friend I hung out with all the time is vegan, and yes -- a lot of the "meats" and "cheeses" are totally gross. Love me some homemade seitan though!

You guys know Vegan Black Metal Chef, right ?
I bought his first DVD, he's also making a book now ("The Seitanic Spellbook", there was a successful kickstarter recently).
That guy is awesome.

This metaphor is key to mutual understanding between me and my girlfriend. She started out with a cheap multi-effect like adobo, and now she's after the latest crazy boutique cardamom grown in some weird dude's garage.

mmmmm cardamom.

I love mango lassi with lots of cardamom in it. Perfect with a super hot curry.

I just got a delivery of small drill bits, and I'm way more excited about it then I should be.

What kind of drill bits?

I bought a masonry bit the other day for work that I was super pumped about.

I was talking to my therapist yesterday, and during the appointment it came to light that even though I have crippling social anxiety I really don't give a fuck and will try any drugs that are pushed under me which really doesn't make sense.

Now that I think about it, I have no social anxiety when it comes to talking to people from Japan as well. I've never actually thought about this before but it's weirding me out a big deal.

I think that anxiety is one of a range of emotions cause by a discrepancy between expectation and perception of reality.

It's almost as if your native culture is so overwhelming from an insider perspective, yet experiencing social interactions of another culture is already expected to be so baffling that you just kind of take it as it comes coupled with relatively academic expectations which allow you to compartmentalize/pretend to understand. So your expectations are either oversimplified or completely removed that it's hard to really compare with your perceptions of reality.

Intercultural communication was one of the most interesting parts of my communication major in college.

Just a note, that whole expectation vs. reality realm also includes anger, fear, sadness and (most importantly) humor (now that I think about maybe this can be applied to all emotion).

Nothing that awesome. Just some small drill bits with stoppers.

Thing is though, I lost all my tools when I moved to NYC 4 years ago. Because living in a small apartment means little room for bigger projects. But I've been slowly re-aquiring tools. Every small thing is a victory.

Dude i get the same thing, snipz makes a good point.
In sydney most of the time I can't leave the house and go out in public without sweating and hyperventilating and needing to retreat somewhere quiet, yet last year and this year I've spent weeks at a time in tokyo alone and while there's still a degree of anxiety when it comes to conversing with people it's not even close to as bad as it is for me at home. Really weird but oddly reassuring in a way so i figure i should get the hell out of there as soon as possible.

Yeah, anxiety fucking sucks.
I'm only realising in this past year exactly how much it has fucked with me and held me back.
If it's on a list of a handful of things that don't scare the shit out of you, I say do it. Not saying it's ok to never push yourself and try things, but start where you're comfortable and when you get shit right and feel good about it, you'll feel better doing more new stuff. You gotta reprogram your brain's approach and reward system.
If only I could follow my own advice.
Basically, don't be me and watch years disappear and get to the point where you need to do the thing or kill yourself.
Also, don't compare yourself to other people. Other people are shitbags. Even people who were friends once.
Ok I'm just talking to myself now.
