Re: the happiness, excitement, and general contentedness thr
Yeesh, didn't realize it would be that much a trek. I might jump on a one week JR pass just so I can jet to Osaka and Kyoto quick for a couple of days. Might have to bow out of Kitakyushu though if it's that far.
I still have two months planning though so I'll have to think it through. I assume going to Niigata is also going to be a tremendous pain in the ass, which is a shame since I have a good friend that lives up that way.

if you're only going as far as Osaka it's possible to get night buses really cheap so JR pass isn't always the cheapest. the buses really aren't comfortable though. and the train is way quicker.
as far as stupid long treks to see bands, i dunno, if you have the time and sort of have the money i'd say it's never a bad idea. the only reason i went back to japan last year is because my favorite band announced a show, i ended up blowing thousands of dollars I shouldn't have blown but still don't even slightly regret it.

Check the planes prices, just in case. There might be cheap ones, and it's fast.

Re: the happiness, excitement, and general contentedness thr
So, I went on a date. My first since the breakup with my roommate. It was a pretty low-key, low expectations thing. Anastasia and I met on OK Cupid over a month ago and have been texting ever since. It has all been very playful and nebulous. We talked about alcohol and how neither of us was drinking currently. I said that I wouldn't mind never drinking again, a thought she echoed. I brought up the tea lounge a block from my house and casually asked if she'd like to go. She said yes. I said "Then it's a date." She said "Not so fast!" I asked if she would like to go out on a date with me to the tea lounge. She said "Duh."
She picked me up at 10AM and we shook hands in her car. I wasn't nervous, which was strange for me. I'm always nervous. She was hungry and I pointed out that the tea lounge had, at most, scones to eat, but there is a lovely diner a block away. We went there. It was snowing big, dry flakes of snow. We went into Emma's and got a table in the back corner. Conversation was instant and natural. We were making good-natured jabs and knowing eye rolls from the start. Breakfast was ordered, then eaten. We sat and talked like sugar hyped teenagers until they told us it was closing time.
We hurried back to my place. She jumped from her car to give me a big hug before she left, then sped off into the morning. We were texting about a second date almost immediately.
It doesn't seem like much, but it has been an island of joy in a sea of fuck. I realized that it was the most successful first date I've ever been on. Oddly, it is the only first date I've ever had that didn't end in sex. Strange, that.

Chuck, this sound so romantic and cosy. Reading it put a smile on my face. I'm totally jealous, but happy for you! =)

So much this!
Also, I think I just had the longest work day of my life. A full day of environmental philosophy and working on my master thesis, and then four concert reviews during the evening/night. Just got home (it's two in the morning here now). Feels good, and now I'm getting drunk on sake while enjoying the idea that I don't have to do anything this weekend.

Also, I briefly met Ognoy and gave him one of my trademark handshake-hugs.

you dog! congrats man!
i've had some real weird dates lately. a chick was totally into me but she kept being negative about everything.
she was in my apartment and i straight up told her to leave because she was so negative i'd rather spend my friday doing something/someone else.
the look on her face was pricelessdon't think she's ever gotten that kind of response. very good looking, but my god, how can anyone stand that. extremely good looking. still.
Send her my way.
I love a negative Nancy.

Ok, so what is enviromental philosophy? I just had to ask. Sounds VERY interesting. Also, is that what you're writing your thesis about?

Offshot of environmental ethics. A lot of discussing whether whatever value nature may have is instrumental or inherent, whether the kartesian focus on dead matter is correct, relational existence of humans through metabolism, ecology, Darwin etc. Very interesting stuff, check out the writings of people like Holmes Rolston and Callicott if you're interested.
Nah, I'm writing on the philosophy of art, namely how noise music can be art.
