Oooooooh! Low blows....that's how I like em.
I love the original. It's kook as fuck, while still being a genuinely thought provoking piece of science fiction.
Bruce Willis is awesome. Brad Pitt is way better than the chick they got playing that role on the show.
And Madeleine Stow doesn't suck either. For a change.
Not to mention that it is a Terry Gilliam joint.
To me, the series is really hammy, seems like it's trying to hard and just generally lacks any sense of depth.
Cole is such an interesting character and that guy just makes him boring. And if they have the time to go deeper on the post apocalyptic life then why don't they?
I dunno man it's kinda lame.

Can't blow above the belt.
So the merits of the original are that it's a well-cast crazy person's fever dream?
It's a SyFy show, so you have to expect a little ham! And they must have a functioning time machine to be able to go get that girl from the Breakfast Club to play Brad Pitt's role.
Cole might not seem as interesting because he's a completely different character. But it's a modern TV show and they want to make money, so they're using pretty established archetypes. I don't mind- at least they didn't go all Battlestar Galactica. But they did a good job making a non-linear time-line, added a bit of post-apocalyptic story (that it looks like they'll spend more time on next season), and now they have people from the future in the present of the guy from our future who's in our present who sent someone from our present into his future present.

A mate of mine recommended it to me. Haven't got round to watching it, since I understood it as pretty dark and heavy (correct?) and I just can't take more of that stuff this time of the year. Might give it a go once the days get longer though.doommeow wrote:The Leftovers is the best thing on TV right now.

It is pretty dark and heavy, depending on ones standards. You could also say it (so far - they've renewed for a 3rd/final season) has a dark, heavy, happy ending?PanicProne wrote:A mate of mine recommended it to me. I thought season 2 had a lot of nice dark humor. It was a little more lighthearted than the first season, while still being totally depressing and off the wall batshit crazy.doommeow wrote:It is pretty dark and heavy, depending on ones standards. Think of it like...I dunno...if Lars Von Trier made Twin Peaks? If Daron Aronofsky made Lost? Something like that. Fucking great show though.

By "original" are you referring to La Jetée by Chris Marker? Because that's the "original" that I prefer.Iommic Pope wrote:Oooooooh! Low blows....that's how I like em.

Is it possible to tell a compelling story all in still photographs? Sure. Why the fuck not? This is science fiction after all!

Le Jetee is interesting, but I was referring to the Gilliam.
A Young Doctor's Notebook is thoroughly enjoyable viewing.

With time travel it isn't always easy to determine which is the "original".Iommic Pope wrote:Le Jetee is interesting, but I was referring to the Gilliam.
Especially with the Ethan Hawkes in Predestination.

Fargo season one is blowing my mind. Watching the finale now and then we're going to start season 2.
