Re: The Video Game thread
I played it at a friend's house. I played for about one hour, 40 minutes. I started playing around four hours into the game (my friend had played before I got there).
1. The grinding felt VERY grindy to me.
2. The algorithm seems advanced at first, but after visiting some planets it was fairly obvious that the shapes of plants, animals and the environment were reused and what changed was simply the hue/size/placement/order.
3. Inventory management was a pain in the ass to navigate and the reward for crafting felt more like a chore.
4. The 'story' felt tagged on. Learning a new word...yay?
5. Combat was tedious. Space combat was cooler than on-ground combat, but it's really, really nothing special. Very basic and bland.
6. Space and planets from afar looks good. I will give them that. But I need more than eye-candy to keep me interested, in the same way I need more than a cool algorithm.

Re: The Video Game thread
i think steam kind of did that for a lot of people. paying $60 for a digital download of any game kind of feels like a ripoff even if it's a great game, and when sale prices are so heavily reduced people are used to the idea of a great game costing much less than $60 not that long after being released.oscillateur wrote:As a game developer, people not wanting to pay full price for a full game experience kind of worries me...
i plan to buy NMS, because i like grindy games, but i'm waiting a while til i get a PS4. 60USD for a download of something with heavily mixed reviews that may or may not work well on my computer is not gonna fly.

Re: The Video Game thread
So it seems similar to how Metal Gear Solid V was designed. Your gaming sessions are in 30-40 minute chunks and there's circular momentum of tasks each time: Do a mission, listen to Story Cassette Tapes and at the same time, develop equipment and manage your staff then do a Side Op. I'm guessing that the 100s of hours in NMS are easier to obtain if you break it down and play on a pretty casual level. Like, Ritz Crackers are probably better eaten in smaller amounts - or else you're either going to ruin your appetite or have nothing to eat tomorrow. /lameanolgyUglyCasanova wrote:I played it at a friend's house. I just want a new, interesting game. Everything always feels like a reskinned version of an already existing game and it doesn't matter if it's Indie or AAA. I like Niche, because even if it isn't for your own tastes - it's still satisfying someone else's unique preferences.

Re: The Video Game thread
While I understand where you're coming from, I don't think you should be worried. I believe the sentiment being expressed is akin to someone not wanting to pay $20 for a CD with only 2 good songs amid a bunch of filler. At least that's where I'm coming from. If a game feels incomplete or "fluffed" then would you want to pay premium prices for a subpar product/experience?oscillateur wrote:As a game developer, people not wanting to pay full price for a full game experience kind of worries me...
If you're passionate about the experience of gaming, focus on making the kind of game you want to play (and replay), and people will be more likely to want the full experience at the price you set.

I'm definitely getting NMS eventually, but I'm waiting until I can clear part of my huge backlog of games still, it's getting ridiculous.

Re: The Video Game thread
In pretty pissed to have pre-ordered NMS on PC just to find out that it's probably not going to work for me
Oh well, still another week or two before I'll even get a chance to play it so maybe they'll have fixed it by then

Re: The Video Game thread
So... new Metal Gear trailer... and I genuinely don't know if the Trailer or the shitty, rabid fanbase is more annoying.
The series has always had weird supernatural elements and scavenging for items so it's not that far off I think? Maybe it's worth playing if it still has the same gameplay as GZ/TPP. I just don't get why it needs to be Multiplayer. Hell, the free MGO3 along barely squeeks by with the last 350 people that are actually interested in it - barely a year later. It's just going to be another Umbrella Corps.

Re: The Video Game thread

It seems like Konami is turning Metal Gear into a generic team based zombie shooter.

Re: The Video Game thread
I've never got the Konami hatred for the whole Pachinko thing, just because they aren't even remotely relevant in Western Society and every popular series already had their own line of Pachinko games anyway.
But i'd happily take this over a new mainline game that adds to the already complete story loop, considering how tight the gameplay is in V
EDIT:
I've gone full circle now. This is actually really funny.

I just think it looks like a shit game that has nothing to do with the MG-series.

Re: The Video Game thread
I think the negative sentiment toward Konami is well-earned and has little to do with Pachinko...or the company whose first 20 years is a legacy of top shelf gaming from arcade to portables. I'm still waiting for a proper sequel to Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. 8 years now and countingAndrew wrote:I've never got the Konami hatred for the whole Pachinko thing, just because they aren't even remotely relevant in Western Society and every popular series already had their own line of Pachinko games anyway.

Re: The Video Game thread
They fixed some of the issues already. There's a BETA version that is supposed to work even better. I haven't tried it because I haven't had any issues running NMS.MrNovember wrote:In pretty pissed to have pre-ordered NMS on PC just to find out that it's probably not going to work for me![]()

It still isn't optimized very well, so you'll definitely have to lower the shadow and reflection settings. Possibly more if your computer isn't the best.
Also max FPS setting to get over 30 fps consistently.

I'm getting 60fps pretty consistently, but there are still a few spikes/stutters occasionally.
I also tried some of the mods. One to remove the visual effect filters, one to remove the "instagram filters", and one to allow you to click once rather than click/hold.
I'll probably only keep the click mod. I kinda like the visual effects and color filters.

Here's my thoughts on metal gear survive:

I was never going to be interested in post-Kojima Metal Gear but this is just fucking insulting.
What isn't insulting is Doom 2016 god damn.

Re: The Video Game thread

After sleeping on it I'm still whatever on the game, but it definitely seems like it's totally doomed before it's even released even if it did manage to be nothing like the Trailers. If it were an expansion to MGSV, noone would be kicking up a stink.
Sigh. I miss the old times where they'd just put the wacky shit like Ac!D, Portable Ops and Peace Walker on the PSP.

Re: The Video Game thread
Looks more like Resident Evil but maybe it will be more like Left4Dead. Man, I would love a Left4Dead 3.
