Re: The Video Game thread
Pretty easy for me to make a GOTY list, I've only played three of them!
1. Enter the Gungeon - skill-based, coffee break, roguelite/roguelike games (with couch co-op!) are perfect for where my life is at right now. I want to be challenged, I want a lot of replay value, but I also need to be able to pick up and play or drop everything quickly when family needs me.
2. Dark Souls III - it's more Dark Souls so I love it, and it might be the best Souls yet, but it's not quite as fresh the 3rd time around. Haven't played the DLC yet.
3. XCOM 2 - Wonderful game with crazy mod support, but it's time consuming (load times are brutal) so I haven't been able to really dig into it in months.
GOTY's that weren't actually released this year:
Nuclear Throne
Radiant Silvergun
Ikaruga
Helldivers

GOTY list:
Dota 2 wins again. It's simultaneously the worst and best game I've ever played. The new patch is hilariously fun so far.

I see a lot of people posting that (on reddit, and that place is such an awful echo chamber), but I don't seem to be having that issue much. None of my friends have mentioned it at all either, no eye pain or anything at all. Wouldn't the options have some sort of brightness setting you could dial down?

I mean it's been happening since they switched from Source 1 (which looked amazing, IMO) to Source 2 but it's really noticeable now:

Ah I can tell just from the thumbnails what you mean. Guess my eyeballs are too shit to notice though. I'm surprised I don't need glasses still.

Re: The Video Game thread
Since my injury, i've been putting a tonne of time into Skyrim on PS4. It feels good actually playing the game, i'm sure that the other 300 hours on my PC version was piss-farting around trying to get Mods to work and trouble shooting.
Playing a straight up Mage with Lydia, i've always played a solo Sneaky Dagger or Bow playstyle. A fun change of place.
EDIT:
I don't know how I managed to accidentally delete the game off my system rather than just close it.
How does that even happen

Re: The Video Game thread
INSIDE was magnificent. Low key dark, dark, dark game.
It has obvious political undertones without beating you over the head with themes or expressing contempt for the player.
The puzzles are just challenging enough to keep you interested without making you rage at a spot for an extended period of time.
But the art style & aesthetic is its biggest strength. A joy even to just watch.

Re: The Video Game thread
I watched the Game Grumps playthrough. It looked cool.
TBH, I want me something with that original King's Quest unfair difficulty. That was my problem with the remake. There were only like one or two parts in the whole series I was legitimately stuck.

Re: The Video Game thread
2016 Games Of The Year
1) Rocket League. Over 250 hours into this, last I checked. Still feel the thrill of a good hit, still laugh at some crazy moments, still feel the remorse of a missed shot or save.
2) Hyper Light Drifter. Retro Zelda nostalgia with skill based action. Have to be willing to die just to learn a little bit more of the boss attack patterns. The character gains new abilities throughout the game, but you yourself gain knowledge and skill on how to overcome all enemies. There is no explicit story laid out or any dialogue, but you learn what is happening through exploring and some quite abstract cut scenes. Looking forward to revisiting this sometime, something I rarley do in single player games.
3) Life Is Strange. I wasn't prepared for this experience. I grew attached to the main characters, so when the story twisted into something dark, and then went even darker, it affected me in ways games never do. I will never forget my time with this game.
4) Inside. A dark journey. Another game where you learn about the story as you pay attention to the world. The short length felt good.
5) Guacamelee. Sort of a Metroidvania mashup with a brawler. High level of baddassery to complete some of the fights and platforming near the end of the game.
Notably absent: Gears of War 4. The Gears series has been one of my favorites in the last decade. Easily spent a thousand hours playing online with friends. Much harder to enjoy the experience jumping in solo with randos or bots on your team, not working together and getting steamrolled by the other team. Can't enjoy Horde mode with the randos dropping out and not getting replaced. The campaign was pretty good though, and had some really awesome moments with an older character. I will play more of this one and the next games.
Worst Game of the Year: Star Wars Battlefront. The game is beautiful and has all the right sounds, just plays like shit. None of the guns felt good, and aiming down sight does nothing but essentially allow the enemy to kill you quicker. Why the hell would you have stormtroopers running around without helmets? That has been patched recently, which may be the one good fix they did. Every patch fixes one thing but screws up like 3 others. Fighter Squadron was a good mode, but there were times the Millenium Falcon and Slave 1 were basically unbeatable, then the A-Wings were impossible to shoot down, then last time I played the X-Wings are overpowered and the Tie Fighters are even easier to shoot down than ever. This had so much potential that has just been fucked by bad ideas and balance. What pisses me off the most is that I will probably jump into the next one and hate it too.
Worst Game Runner Up: Batman Arkham Knight. Great story, but fuck your batmobile platforming and tank action.
MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES FOR 2017
Mass Effect Andromeda - Loved the original trilogy. Minor reserve how this game will turn out.
X-Com 2 - Loved the first one, and just picked this up on sale, won't get around to playing it for a few weeks.
Axiom Verge - Metroid throwback.
The Witness - Heard it is great too many times to ignore.
more Rocket League - I can't stop.
more Gears of War 4
Ori and the Blind Forest - in my backlog, got it free on Xbox
Child of Light - same as Ori
Mario Party 2 and 3 - planning on reacquiring a N64 to have some family game nights

Spent the evening playing MGSV as an idle game: sitting in the ACC doing combat deployments, collecting resources and upgrading the base.

Hey! Let's talk about serious thing. We're gonna talk about guitar, dude.

MGSV is so good, it bums me out that people either shit on it or avoid it for bullshit reasons. For a Private Military Contractor Simulator filled with ridiculous shit, its one of the best. Playing it CQC only, onsite procurement, heavily armed, no supply drops or Tranq only gives it so much replay-ability

Re: The Video Game thread
So, after getting ourselves that PS4 on Black Friday me and my gf so far have played quite a bit of LEGO Marvel Superheroes, although we both get a bit nauseous playing more than 1,5hrs at a time. Personally I haven't been able to play FPS games more than 15minutes since Fallout 3 came out (after that I stopped, was never a big FPS fan anyways), but LEGO really isn't first person so shouldn't be a problem.
More importantly though, we played through Life Is Strange together and absolutely loved it. It reaaally fits me in what type of game it is, but I reckon even so it's one the top one's in that bowl. My gf hasn't played games since she owned a 8-bit Nintendo as a kid but loved it to. "I didn't know games like this existed". Good story, brilliant voice acting, good characters, super twists, nice philosophical side to it and nice revearsal of time mechanic (that's the only spoiler, promise!). Emotional too, I even had a little cry at the end which was cool. Even though I'm a pretty emotional person, I VERY (no, really, VEEEEERRY, like 3 times in my life) rarely cry cause of art (music, movies, games, etc),. I enjoyed it a lot. Borrowed The Last Of Us from my brother, so have that coming up, and then eventually I'll get the Last Guardian, cause yeah, I need to play it!
