Sounds like the shipping label was created upon reading [nieh's] inquiry email, response sent without being completed/processed.
Lip-service given, akin to "the check's in the mail" to buy more time. Appears to be a costly mistake, figuratively speaking.
Idk if this is indeed the case, but foolish individuals still think they can get away with hasty internet lies in the age of digital paper trails.
Honest gestures go a long way, treatment is remembered either way.
"Sorry it hasn't shipped yet, we've been jammed up and backlogged. We'll make it right; some extra swag or a 10% discount on future purchase."
Better than being caught in some deceitful dumb shit...talk about a bad look. So unprofessional :|:

Jesus Christ what a shit day for everybody involved.
Why tf do *people* (read: cozy corporate bigshots and buster-ass bureaucrats, asinine administrators) do this shit the week before Christmas?
I got canned from a much-less-important job the week of Christmas back in the Bush years.
But I didn't have a household full of dependents & soul-sucking debt stressing me out. That's just scust.
They really had to ruin the holiday weekend for everyone in proximity of this fella's life? Couldn't wait until the week after?
This is the exact type of bullshit why I have no patience for the lip-service of corporate speak & academia overrun by cold phonies.

I was already in a sour mood, since my ilfss-mas gift stopped working today. Half of it anyway. Suddenly, in the proper context my issue (rightfully) seems like small potatoes, but I'm now in even more of a sour mood, sad for the fella who got laid off instead of a bonus
:hello:

Short answer: I work for students, not faculty. There are two periods in a year when you can fire someone in academe. This is one of them. Would have been done two weeks ago if he'd submitted grades on time.

Still ultra shitty--no doubt. But the guy was causing havoc at every level of the college. Right decision, wrong time.

I just hope 2017 isn't me being in a major depressive state for well over half of it. I've hated damn near every second since returning from Japan, because that was the first time I've been that happy in who knows how long (probably ever). Unfortunately that doesn't motivate me to get my ass over there, just depresses me more. I haven't talked to anyone overseas in months since I have no idea how to initiate a conversation. Hell, starting a conversation itself feels like a weird and foreign concept to me.

I can only compare my depression to Sisyphus, no matter how high I start feeling it'll turn around. Life blows. NJ blows. At least I don't want to blow my skull off anymore probably.

Hey, justified layoffs happen. If not submitting grades on time is any indication of performance then it's def understandable.
Obv dunno what you mean by causing havoc but it sounds like there was a pattern of unprofessionalism.
Speaking of which, I am grateful to not be a kid nor raising kids, especially in university, in the current climate on campuses.
I don't envy you, working for/answering to The Daycare Generation with their participation trophies & perpetual offense.

^I am the administrator in this situation. Trying to simultaneously own the bullshit/not own the bullshit. Guess I wasn't clear earlier--poor writing. I had to do the firing.

Sports fans have a knack for ruining sports, like overzealous parents yelling at everyone in kids' sports. :whoa:
Sports media are kinda analogous to a chimera of them both :erm:
Participation trophies signify being a loser; awarded a dust-collecting trinket to remind everyone they're not only a loser, but the type of loser who'd rather pretend to be a winner than become one. Trophies are for champions, not losers. Personally, I don't fetishize [them] but rewarding mediocrity discourages the exceptional from trying their best, rewarding the exceptional encourages the mediocre to try harder.

Carthic rant coming:
NSFW: show
They're literally nothing more than a commemorative token of participation: they impart nothing different than a commemorative tee shirt or a team photo. No sports-playing child is going to see a participation trophy and think that they did any better or worse during whatever fun and games event it was because they have a trophy instead of one of the aforementioned bits and bobs -- most kids aren't that fucking stupid, and they're keenly aware of how they measure up to their peers with regards to sports and sports-like behavior.

Sure, there are some kids that are deluded, but that A) doesn't come from them, most of the time and B) existed long before any bitching about "participation trophies" started and will continue long after said bitching stops. Saying you "don't fetishize" trophies and then saying, in the same breath, that they're "for champions, not losers" is disingenuous for all sorts of reasons, but the biggest one is that no one has ever confused a participation trophy for a championship trophy. Ever. end of story.

It's not a "reward for mediocrity" it's a "token of participation," because people, generally, like having keepsakes of the fact that they were part of (hopefully) a fun thing. If someone isn't nuanced enough to realize that a trophy can serve the same purpose as zillions of other things (hats, the aforementioned tee shirts and team photos, so on so forth), that's probably because they're stupid -- it's the same rationale behind "we shouldn't raise the minimum wage because I, who make more than the minimum wage, will then be worth less." Your tee ball league champions trophy isn't devalued because the folks on the losing team got a participation trophy because, again, no one has ever confused a participation trophy for a championship trophy.
Thanks for that, RW. I needed that today.

No prob :p no disingenuous either. A league-issued jersey/sports uniform you've worn in a game is already a token of participation.
It's free of connotation either way (of being a winner or loser) and a fitting reminder there's more to sports than winning alone.
A participation trophy is a symbol of being a distinguished loser and attempt to dress it up as an achievement worth celebrating. Corny.

I also don't fetishize olympic medals, but respect the hard work and dedication that goes into placing; even bronze signifies a remarkable achievement. It's supposed to be earned. You don't get one just for showing up and going through the motions. Do you think everyone should get a medal for competing in the olympics? For a keepsake?
