Word up.
Did this in my MIG50 (also a Bassman) and it makes a massive difference.
12AT7s can also hanlde more hardcore voltages and are thus better suited for the PI position.

I may or may not be talking out of my arse.

The GE 12AT7 and Sylvania 12AX7 are both rated for 300 volts (plate voltage) but yeah I've heard you can punish the 12AT7's fairly brutally and they keep coming back. The original AA864 schematic shows 220 and 205 plate voltages on the PI halves, which is typical, like 200V on the V-4 etc.. I tried a few different PI tubes since I've gotten my Bassman back up and running in the last year and I think the biggest difference for me was having a "matched" tube, that's to say both sides that are being used as the phase inverter have very close gain characteristics. I thought it was BS magic from the tube depot till I tried it.

Back to smaller tube amps that cost wayyy too much money, I looked at some Deluxe Reverbs yesterday, and about puked. I may just buy one of those '68 custom reissue joints and put a turret board in it myself, and maybe get some classictone transformers.
Then there is also this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ampeg-gemini-2- ... SwPK1ZUFYn
It's pretty rough, but I like the 15.. Ampeg also used some weird tubes in these amps, but I believe you can just change the socket wiring and a couple resistors to use more conventional tubes.. It's just money.

A few months late, sorry.

How do you like the OR50? Good cleans and takes pedals well enough? I love Orange's thick tones but sometime Orange don't get too friendly with fuzz or dirt pedals. :idk:

Why doesn't fender bring back the sunn brand? I'd love to get a sunn beta lead head ...

I'm looking to get a '73 Pro Reverb very soon. How loud would you say it has to be for the sound to get a little bit coarse and gritty?

Hey man :hello: Honestly, it really sucks with fuzz. Like really. Anything past 3 on the preamp gain and you may as well forget it. It eats up boosts though. Like Mini with half gain and cranked volume, or Gray Chanel on the no diodes setting (this is a particular mighty sound), but with fuzz, all the ones I've thrown at it, it just fucking hates. I've thought about trying a Pharaoh on the no diode setting, that'd probably rip.

The actual amp gain is great though if you're into that. :animal:

Love my Pro Reverb, however it's not as loud as my Sunn or Ampeg. With my Les Paul I can get it to break up at around 4-5 on the volume knob. With my tele maybe around 5-6. It's definitely loud, just not deafening like the others. The perfect club/bar/garage amp I think, but probably not in a doom situation :) It definitely has the best cleans and reverb of any amp I have and takes pedals as well as anything.

Just stumbled upon an obscure Eurotrash 6x12 from the 70'ies. Spanish made Music-Son weird ass cab. It's got 3 guitar speakers and 3 bass speakers, originally voiced for organ and bass. Sounds very dark and midrangey-doomey with the SC amp. The bottom section 2 x 12's is angled upwards so you have a monitor effect instead of sandblasting your ankles with fuzz. Tried to bridge the SoundCity and Peavey amp with a total of 12x12". Had to poop.
