After this's all over, I hope the U.S. gov't bills Trump for the damage he's done to our reputation

Let's put it out there: what day do you think Trump will can Mueller? And how many people will quit or themselves be fired before someone is in place who will obey the order and do it?
I'm gonna say Tuesday and two.

From what I understand, Mueller can only be fired for cause. Without cause, the order would carry no force of law. Hopefully that will short circuit any attempt at a Nixonian style massacre.Gone Fission wrote:Let's put it out there: what day do you think Trump will can Mueller? Also, it's been suggested that if Trump tries to pardon Flynn, or anyone else who could implicate him, the pardon may be contested as a conflict of interest with respect to the president's Constitutional requirement to faithfully execute the laws of the country. That might require the Supreme Court to weigh in.
That doesn't mean Trump won't try either of those things out of desperation.
We are living in interesting times, that's for sure. Trump has been a fiasco of historical proportions.

Trump is a sad reflection of where we are as a country - we're so divided and each side is so overrun with extremists that moderate, competent candidates were pushed aside for those who tow the party line and/or are just as batshit insane as the fringes of each party. Historically things do eventually balance themselves out and come back to the center, but I don't want to imagine how much worse things have to get until we can move back to that.Lurker13 wrote:From what I understand, Mueller can only be fired for cause. Trump and Hillary Clinton are both sad reflections of this country, and the fact that a presidential candidate can lose the popular vote and win the election via the Electoral College just shows how we are so brainwashed with tradition that we cling to an anachronistic election system that has been out of date for over 100 years just because, hey, it's the American thing to do.Bassist_Diver wrote:Trump is a sad reflection of where we are as a country - we're so divided and each side is so overrun with extremists that moderate, competent candidates were pushed aside for those who tow the party line and/or are just as batshit insane as the fringes of each party. Personally, I hope we continue moving to the left, because that represents progress. The center just represents stagnation and tolerance for an intolerable status quo where Big Money rules, e.g. where a for-profit healthcare system is considered moral and just and a thing of wonder and glory and superior to every other country's healthcare system, even though that is provably false. And the right is the worst choice, because it represent devolution back to when things were even worse, under the guise of returning to some mythological age when mythical America was a wonderland.

I hate to break it to you, but the moderates are batshit insane too. To live in this nation and world and think that the established, incrementalist ways of making change are going to do anything of value is as crazy as thinking that one can merely lick ones' way through a brick wall. So-called moderate dems and repubs are both living in major denial, cognitive dissonance, all that. There is no moderate way to put out a fire.Bassist_Diver wrote:we're so divided and each side is so overrun with extremists that moderate, competent candidates were pushed aside for those who tow the party line and/or are just as batshit insane as the fringes of each party.

Moreover you can truly blame all the "extremist" "issues" on the middle with their passive aggressive way of [not]dealing with things and letting them fester and go out of control. Take racism. Because the majority did not ever take a hard line on really stopping racist factions and practices even at a systematic level we are still discussing civil rights... still... no, it's better to not rock the boat, can't go against the status quo because well.. boys will be boys..John wrote:I hate to break it to you, but the moderates are batshit insane too. Every day the state of my country gets more and more ridiculous. Its like I picked the fucking bad ending in a choose your own adventure book.
I just want my family to be ok. I wanna get married. I wanna see my son grow up. I wanna get my own place and be happy. I'm not asking for much. And now I'm spending my days worrying that this big orange cunt will get ether my sister on Hawaii nuked or just skip that and move straight to the states.
Its like asking for happiness in this time is asking for too much.

Agreed. It's the middle that has a sense of entitlement. The middle that (thinks it) isn't affected by racial and class issues. The middle that wants its status to remain protected. The middle that actually is to blame for injustice and human-rights abuse domestic and international, by remaining spenders of blood money, passive consumers of blood oil, blood diamonds, blood iPhones, blood food- fuck, the US performed coups in Central America so that sugar manufacturers could make an extra percentile. Chiquita Banana had journalists disappeared to protect their profit margin! And don't even get me started on the drugs. The passive middle way people are the Good Cops. Fuck'em.Mudfuzz wrote:Moreover you can truly blame all the "extremist" "issues" on the middle with their passive aggressive way of [not]dealing with things and letting them fester and go out of control. This is a long read from 2012 about Mitt Romney that, I think, is quite applicable to some facets about where we are today -- to the point that it could be written tomorrow and still be worth reading:

Hmm. What other English-speaking countries have you got, preferably ones that haven't had their political life ratfucked by Putin?
