100% endorse. I love this. I have some similar stuff but am not gonna go whole hog right now.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Re: The Last Jedi
I’ll add, too, that having an element of Leia using a combo of the Force, her military skills, her willingness to sacrifice so others can carry on, and some tactical ‘luck’ to destroy a fleet is a much better plot device and send-off for her character.
Ends up similar to Luke’s Death Star run, only he is taking the Obi-Wan role in speaking to her...nice symmetry, everyone is happy, Luk demonstrates his Force-ghost skill without it killing him.

Re: The Last Jedi
That’s what I was saying somewhere earlier—probably page one. They went out of their way to be clever in subverting things that didn’t need to be subverted. It’s very easy to duck up a movie and call it ‘subversive.’
What’s harder is to find ways to be creative within constraints and to still make a fun popcorn movie. I think it failed at that. Yours is better, which is both a compliment to you and an insult to the movie.
I choose to live in a world where vidret’s Star Wars was produced.

Re: The Last Jedi
The film would 100% have sucked more if they'd made a big deal of Rey's ancestry. It would have probably stirred something in the pants of fanboys the same way ESBs reveal did but that's the kind of cheap move they'd have pulled in the prequels or Star Trek Discovery

Is starwars more potent now because fuck the federation "join us", always thought the united federation of planets was way more invasive than the empire, as far as show to show went...we are supposed to be fighting against an empire....reflections...u.s.a u.s.a u.s.a!!!

You made me think about Ice pirates... The mouse people should remake that one.. then they could make cute version of the space herpy and make plushness of it for all the kids to cuddle with while their parents suckle off the teet of capitalism.

Re: The Last Jedi
only 4 pages into this thread, gotta drive 6 hours to Montreaux soon, will read the rest later.
saw it a week back and..... i dunno. i was a huge fan of SW as a kid. wiping all the interesting stories from EU out of cannon annoyed me and FUCK Lukas for not being able to watch the movies i grew up on. they.... just don't exist. that killed a lot of my enjoyment of SW stuff, the shit fuck mess hole of the Trilogy finished off my adoration.
Force Awakens was okay. felt a bit too fan servicey. Rogue One was interesting, but the only character i cared about was the robot. super pimp, everyone else was soooooo freaaaaakinnnng blannnnnnnnd. Donny Yu The Blind Smacky Almost Jedi was someone that should have had more development.
i..... dunno how i feel about the Last Jedit. weird pacing. Kilo and Rey were really interesting, great character development, but every time they had a scene "together" it cuts to... fucking Prequel Casino? or He's Like Han Solo Really LOVE HIMMMMM Apocalypse/Blue/I Forget His Name dooder moping about.... really cheapened all the well done tension and story building.
pacing was bad, humor was mostly shit (i liked Guardians of the Galaxy too, but fuck. not every damn movie needs to be quippy. DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK. fucking prank calls? really?), too many ohhhh we're so clever subversions to SW story telling that felt weak.
and Luke. man. fuck YOU. i don't want to see the most relentlessly Believe In The Power Of Good character EVER as a grumpy old burnt out fuck, but at least do it well. the build up of 2 years waiting for Rey to hand him the lightsaber being a Fuck You Fans over the shoulder toss joke? eat a dick. and his almost murdering his nephew, not only totally against type for someone that TRIED AND SUCCEEDED TURNING THE MOST EVIL MAN IN THE GALAXY BACK TO THE LIGHT, but all the consequences to every relationship he has? his sister and best friend's kid?
fuck off.
...... i guess i still care about SW a little.
besides that, if i could watch it again without the Prequel Dripping Infected Peen Of Crap Child Pandering And Awful CG scenes, i'd be into it. was fun for all it's faults.
and fuck YESH Lightspeed Suicide Bomber. FINALLY a series talks about the oh so obvious HORRIBLE possibilities of their technology.
that scene was BEAUTIFUL.
lol. and hilarious that they had to warn theaters that their was a scene of silence. NOTHING IS WRONG. WE ARE ARTING. CARRY ON.

Re: The Last Jedi
Yeah, gut feeling more and more like most of the lamenting on this page will align with much of my own current & future sentiment, if when I see it on the small screen. Prior to its filming I maintained low expectations, the nice-attempt-at-GOTG-banter seems almost inevitable given how calculated SW has been, historically from a marketing-approach; however the old films didn't/don't feel like they were the product of a corporate ad firm/marketing dept/thinktank where the franchise is trying (too hard) to be everything to everyone like a full-feature superbowl commercial.
I get a bit of good-natured ribbing from I_M Weasel over there
when returning to a familiar expression of disgust for gratuitous hipster-y postmodernism... but once again it seems the shoe fits, albeit a bit snugly. If I were to find a metaphor for this *style* of moviemaking, it's like watching the 6th smartest/funniest person in a group engage in a perpetual struggle of interrupting, redirection and 1upping peers who have a better read of the room, are dynamically on fire, and ready to operate in sustained rare form. Dunning-kruger effect in full effect.

This was the postmodern Star Wars movie. Adam Driver is the archetypal millennial boyfriend.
