Exactly what I wanted to say. I have most of my pedals up there in the attic. If I had only a third of my collection on a (big) board, I'd be lost. I only use what I really need for the moment. And almost every month or every few weeks I sweap my current setup for a completely different one. I'm still creative and happy.

I have done the "fit every pedal on a board and sell the ones that don't fit" thing for a long time, and it is tiresome at this point.

I'm sort of on the other side of the spectrum from what's being said, I hate excess and clutter and holding onto things for "just incase" situations. I allowed myself to stockpile like crazy over the past 4 years and the past year has been all about consolidation and clutter cleansing. In the past 2 years I've managed to only buy 2 pedals. Now I have a bunch of synths and circuit bent drum machines/keyboards I'm sampling out in order to sell off.
This mindset obviously isn't for everyone but I'd rather have a select few pieces I know 100% than a huge sack of one off tricks.

That being said, yeah, if you can afford it hold onto the stuff, I just know there's no way I can afford to store shit without it paying rent.

I agree. While I would love to keep a huge collection of pedals and stuff, I barely use my current pedals enough to warrant keeping them. I've gotten up to a Novo 24 size board and back down to a PTJR, and now I'm working on getting a MEtro16 and just sticking to it.

Planning on putting the tuner sideways onthe top rail, but this is just to see how it will work. Still plenty of options for cool sounds with 5 pedals on a Metro16

See I will use all the pedals no problem, but I'm in a place where I feel like it's not helping me to create. I could soundscape for hours though. A lot of the issues I have are also due to the fact that I can never play the way I want comfortably. I feel like I'm annoying an entire house of people. So, I tend to not use my dirt pedals very often because they are the most abrasive. Maybe this is a two part thing. Get proper sound paneling of some sort and down size. If I just had somewhere I could pump up the volume (LOL).

Yeah, I had to sell most of my pedals, have been slowly adding back a few essentials, but nowhere near as many as I had, and I was able to focus and finally get my new album recorded. Not a band as such, cos I play all the guitars and drums and stuff, but it sounds like one and certainly wouldn't have got done if I had still been faffing about with loops and weirdness, trying to reach maximum trash sound 4ever.

Yeah whenever I'm in a band I get much more focussed on what gear I need to achieve the sounds I want rather than things that look fun and I want to try them. Kills any desire for new fancy things pretty much which is nice.

I totally agree with the point of view that having a specific project detracts from frivolous GAS. I also need a band and don't smoke or drink. I honestly don't mind if the guys I jam with do that around me, but I find that in general people get weird if they're imbibing and you just hang out being sober.

That said in several months of playing in my band we've never got round to drinking/smoking together. That's pretty odd now I think about it... We should hang out more.

See the challenge for me is that I want it to be primarily about the music. When I was in a band in my teens, we did it jacked up. That's basically how we jammed. So, for me I need to avoid that in general or I can very easily fall into a trap of using again. I don't want that.

I wanted to join a dude's band about 2 years ago and all they did was drink and smoke, so I'm glad that they blew me off like they did. Relapse waiting to happen for me.

I'm sure there's some other level headed dudes in KC I can get with. Maybe Josh from JHS?

I don't have any addiction issues and have no particular judgments about people using alcohol and/or weed, but I do identify with this a lot. When I was in my 20's I would be in bands where we might just drink or smoke weed or something all day, then jam/write/record. At some point I stopped smoking weed, because it just felt like something that wasn't adding to my life anymore...and ditto with alcohol...and now it feels like every time I go to jam with a band or find people to play music, it's just an excuse to smoke weed and/or drink and hang out and the music is just incidental. Not ALL the time, but it has happened a lot of times over the past 5-10 years. It hasn't stopped me from joining some of those bands though, as long as they're not weird about me not partaking, I still kind of stay all business. That's always kind of been my band persona when actually doing band stuff though, I like to be efficient with time and get lots done, when the band is up and running. I like hanging out before and after.
