My flatmate's grandad was a master cabinet maker. He took one day of a guitar building course, then used all of his skills to build this Les Paul. Its about 30 odd years old. Flamed maple top, mahogany body with maple neck. Schaller hardware, mother of pearl all over the shop, and what I believe are Dimarzio humbuckers.

It's heavy as fuck but perfectly balanced, plays like a dream, and sounds incredible. It's a family heirloom, which my flatmate's dad gifted to me as he really loves our music (flatmate is the drummer in my band). Super unique piece of kit and sentimentally priceless.

My buddy makes custom guitars and he just finished this. I want to give him my whole tax return next year.

His explorers are amazing also. He also makes amazing speaker boxes. I have his 2x12 with swamp thangs and it's amazing!

I think im going to have him make me a baritone explorer with an aluminum neck

Very cool aluminum necks.

I have a question about them- what happens when you need a refret? Are the frets normal frets that are fixed on the aluminum neck or are they milled into the neck as one piece?

Please pardon me as I see we're talking aluminum necks and baritone explorers.

I have a thing for 6-series Rickenbackers -- love the body shape -- cresting wave just screams surf to me. I've owned a 650 Dakota for six or seven years. I've kept my eyes peeled for a 650 Atlantis -- love the turquoise.

Found this guy several weeks ago and after some deliberation I picked it up. It's got GFS humbuckers currently installed, but also came with a set of Rickenbacker hi-gains, which is strange since these came with humbuckers from the factory.

I originally sold my wife on this purchase by saying I was going to sell the Dakota but I kind of want to keep both. Love looking at 'em side-by-side.

While the body didn't need to be routed for the GFS pickups some of the finish got scuffed up in the cavity when they were installed, and the hardware isn't well-fitted. It's also got 11s on it right now which are just way too light for me, but the neck is straight and the setup job is good. I don't have a proper stack in the city so before I take it to Chicago Music Exchange I'm going to have a trip home to wail on it a bit. I also have no idea as to if the Ricky single coils I've got were removed for a reason? :?:

On mine, the frets are stainless steel, inserted in the fretboard like on a regular wood neck. The SS means the chances of needing a refret are significantly reduced, but it is possible to do if necessary. The nut is aluminium, but is a separate insert, so could be replaced too

Thanks! I took the Atlantis into Chicago Music Exchange today to have a bone nut made, setup done, and the pickups swapped with the hi-gains. Looking forward to having it back. I also don't have a single coil guitar at the moment so another nice tool to have in the arsenal.

If anyone wants the GFS humbuckers I'd let 'em go for next to nothing. :)
