My thought behind it is that it may help me decide what to buy after it, and after that and after that. Since it will do so much.

I just sold one. I had it for about six weeks. It was the least fun module ever, lots of ways to use it and you need a list to keep track of all the settings. It is possible to set up presets but frankly it was just buzz kill to have to stop and find which quantizer does what or try to remember where the delay is.it has close to 64 different machines in there.(mk4) Its small and somewhat awkward with every thing plugged in. 4hp

Ok flame off

On the plus side sound quality is good on the fx, it does several sample playback methods and most of the utilities you might want are there... lfo, sequencer etc. its a very good value of functions for dollars.

It will depend on your method but for me I want to feel my way toward a sound. Ya, i read manuals and am down with software (ableton, ozone, omnisphere etc.) but that is not the reason i have a eurorack. It was too heady for me.

I have trouble remembering half of the modes in MKI and I'm pretty sure there are only 16. 64 is crazy. I totally agree, it's really not a fun module at all, but it is pretty useful and since no one would buy an MKI for a reasonable amount of money at this point, I'll probably keep it around forever

I had a make noise rosie in my case for a while but I noticed the fidelity not as good as a cheap soundcraft mixer, so in euro fidelity will cost more. Also offboard mixers often have simple eq that can really clean things up mudwise. There is also the send bus which could buffer and shape signals back into your rack for more sound sculpting.
I use one of these to boost/att. To the mixer...dirt cheap and small. http://ladik.ladik.eu/?page_id=1417

jia. pretty much my thoughts.

lol. might end up having to go through three or four to find one good with Euro Levels like i had to before i got the solid butts one i have now. but. seems wayyyyy cheaper.

I have a MKIV and I mostly use it for the adder. But every once in a while I want to try something out in modular land and it turns out disting can do it. So, not always worth it, but nice to have around. Someone made a nice relatively concise guide that I have printed out for quick reference: http://www.vo1t.com/Euro/Illustrated/ES ... k4V4.5.pdf

curious - if one wanted to use a Disting as just a reverb, does it? does it WELL?

WELL DOES IT?

I only tried it once if that tell you much. But my guess is that Rings was coming too hot and that if I had attenuated the audio it would have been passable. Other people seem to think it's okay. I haven't revisited it since I got an Erbe Verb.

Lesson from yesterday's patch : Mikrophonie works pretty well as an od/distortion/borderline fuzz. You just need an attenuator after it because, well, it's loud as fuck :).

Yeah, I love big overdriven sounds and I can't lie...

I currently have several of modules that can do that and I want to increase that number even more (hence my interest in the Tallin, thanks for the detailed feedback btw) :
- Manhattan Analog CP3 (that thing is simple and wonderful)
- WMD/SSF Ultrafold (so many sound crunching options)
- Bastl Cinnamon
- Music Thing Mikrophonie

Then I can use the Noise Tools sample and hold as a samplerate reducer, and Maths can act as a sort of very unsubtle audio processor using the EOC/EOR outputs (maybe mixed with the slewed ones). And I can abuse both Chronoblob and PicoDSP into clipping but it's not always great sounding (can be nice sometimes though).

I need to test more things to see if I can get Rings to behave sort of like a weird overdrive too but I'm not sure that's really possible :).

Btw, talking of the Chronoblob, am I the only one who loves the clicks you get when freezing the buffer and who doesn't want to upgrade to the latest firmware because it removes these clicks ?

I feel like if that's what you want, maybe just get a Pico DSP? I liked those reverbs when I had one.

I’m pretty fussy about how reverb sounds and I like the sound of the Distings OK, but to me they were free (added in firmware revision well after I bought the Distings.) In context of how much I feel like I paid for Disting verb it is hard to judge maybe as harshly as I should because; they are easy to clip, they sound a little grainy, and dialing things in on Disting’s step thru menu is a bit of a pain, esp. with things like reverb were there is interaction between parameters.
