Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
So I got a new job that pays decent, and I'm looking to replace my Ceriatone JCM800, I've been looking at the Ampeg V4, but there's also this bassman (https://knoxville.craigslist.org/msg/d/ ... 07434.html) reasonably close to me. I'm kinda stuck.
Also, my brother likes making beats and such, I know nothing about that kinda stuff. Is there an affordable, quality christmas/bday gift I can get him?

Are the Teenage Engineering calculator guys an option? They seem fun
Wish I could help with the amps other than to say I wish I still had my 60s Bassman head. Thing fuckin roared on the rare chance I was allowed to crank it. The addition of a midrange control is very appealing. Now that I say it, if a recreation of the Normal channel of this amp with a mid knob exists in the wild let a brother know.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
i got some money in the bank for the first time in ~6 months so i'm thinking in the new year, i'll invest in ONE OR TWO and NO MORE drone-oriented purchases. i can't handle big amps with big cabs (as much as i'd like to, just no room to store stuff and no car to haul) so i'm thinking of something i can use DI into a mixer, maybe split from my regular ol' guitar signal.
i like the idea of ehx micro synth and a freeze into a bass preamp for the boom boom bottom end

anyone with a Korg MS-20 have any idea how Luminist patched the intro sequence motif from the Super Metroid prologue? (0:07 on)

The sub bass seems perfect, I appreciate the recommendationfriendship wrote:Are the Teenage Engineering calculator guys an option? They seem fun
My friend got a super reverb head with no reverb tank, I kinda want to mod it. Do people mod the vibrato channel or do they just stick to the normal channel?

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
The conventional wisdom is that non-trem/reverb people still use the effects channel because there’s an extra gain stage that doesn’t really add much gain, but a bit and a subtle touch of compression. So most people will cannibalize the trem gain stage and the normal channel first. But listen to what’s there and figure out what you want to preserve.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
Typing this out here, for some self perspective.
Never really loved my 74 Twin. Considering doing more to it to possibly make it sound better. New speakers, reverb tank, and tubes will run about $400. Wondering if I should just dump the amp cheap to make it disappear locally, like $500, and then take that $400 for possible upgrades and find something else for $900 or less. It isn't my #1 amp but I like the size and volume enough to keep. Just always struggled with the touch response and EQ and pedals vary wildly into it.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
The blackface/silverface eq scoop can make pedaling really haphazard. There's a history of people figuring out pedals that work with these amps (Tube Screamer yes, Muff less so). But this can limit options of what you can use. People will try to even things out with midrange-y speakers or maybe a EQ pedal with a frowny eq into the input. Half measures. You could get the eq modded for less scoop (ala Mark series Boogies). Or do your trade plan and find an amp with a more even-handed response to deal with. Seems like the smarter move to me.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
FWIW, it is a 1974 silver face. Half modded to blackface specs when I got it. My tech finished it, added expression control for tremolo speed and a negative feedback pot. Already has Eminence speakers, Governor and Wizard. Reverb tank wasn't the right model, but it looked old enough, but didn't work so I have tried a couple. I want to try a new tank with a different orientation with the jacks up, helps the transducer not dampen the strings, trying to get that surf drip. Have a mod 3 spring tank in there now, it is lush and only gets to 4 on the dial before feedback occurs, but does not drip at all. Found I like Tung Sol tubes way more than JJs in it, so I have swapped a few here and there. Putting a 12AX7 in the phase inverter (V6) noticeably helps soften the brittle response. Might try to pull two power tubes and disconnect a speaker to try one at a time. Might just drop my listed price and see if it spurns interest.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I went deep on experimenting with the Twin all day long. Determined the Wizard speaker is not as pleasant when slammed with dirty pedals. So I ordered a Swamp Thang to try to pair with the existing Governor. Skimmed through probably 50 speaker comparison videos, 3 were worthwhile, go figure. Also ordered a new reverb tank from Tube Amp Doctor that came from a solid recommendation. Further down the hole I go. Will worry about tubes later.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
not much to add other than I strongly disliked my buddy’s 65 reissue Twin, but I really liked a master volume silverface Twin I got to play thru, not sure what speakers they have in them.
Also I saw Roomrunner live and one of their guitar players had a Twin with G12-65 Celestions, and that sounded great with lots of distortion

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
if its already modded why not just mod the tonestack to be more midrangey? if you are lucky it is just two resistors per channel. An even better idea is mod it to have a midrange knob like the showmans. I think it is gonna help you more than swapping speakers

I'm not a 100% cause I can't find the sourcefrom years ago, but I believe I read that Doug Martsch did that with his Twinqersty wrote:if its already modded why not just mod the tonestack to be more midrangey? if you are lucky it is just two resistors per channel.
