I've been to several foreign countries. I know exactly what people think of "Americans" and I also know what I think of them. So, it's a two way street there.

Here's my final thoughts on this. I was angry yesterday and I have also been afraid. Not just for myself. For my family, my friends, my tenants (yea I actually care about this believe it or not).


I can't make anyone believe I'm not a big bad wolf because I'm a landlord. I can't. I got into this business begrudgingly. I was at a point in my life where I did not know where I wanted to go or how I was going to continue on. My family had started doing rentals (my dad has for over 40 years but doesn't now) and I did not want to. My dad actually tried to give me a property. Literally give it to me. I did not want it. So, I waited until I was finally at my wits end with life. I have struggled for years to try and find a way to help others because I wanted to give back. My thought was I could turn around some of the negativity that comes along with owning properties. I have too. My first property my dad bought and I paid him for it. This last year, I refinanced and took over the note.

I own 7 properties and honestly I don't want any of them anymore. Not because of the tenants or because of my responsibilities, but because I'm sick of being hated when all I've ever wanted in life is to be accepted.

My tenants seem to like me. Hell, I was over at a house today looking at an issue and we talked for 30 minutes across the room because we both miss seeing other people. However, I don't know what they really think or me or my "profession".

I got into being a landlord because I wanted to retires someday (after I sell) and also hopefully leave my kids money that they can build from. Plus, I honestly thought I could help people this way too. I was working with a battered woman's shelter at one point and trying to go the route of renting to people in dire need but they program they have in place is so screwed up that I had to bail. They weren't helping people. I also am able to do things other landlord wouldn't like waive fees or give people more time to pay or give them the personal attention needed because I'm not bogged down by having too many. I fix my properties and I always try to improve and upgrade them.

Was that a wrong move for me? To try and build something?

I know I'm not the smartest guy on the block or the most talented, but I genuinely only want to do good and I hate this world sometimes because I don't know what to do.

NO matter what I do in life, I'm a piece of crap in someone's eyes. No matter what life choices I make or what I do.



Onto Communism. I realize now that it appeared as if I was calling Joe a commie and I was not, I just wrote a cluster of stuff in my head and probably should not be together.


Right now there are legislative groups going around the country (look at KC Tenants for an example). These groups pretend to have the best interest of the many but they are liars and people have drank the koolaid like nobodies business. The groups are run by rich people who are trying to go for political office. They are using people to push their own agendas and masking it under the guise of "we want to give you free housing". After I started investigating these groups (for the last year), I found that a lot of them use communist terminology and actually identify as communist. Not all of the people in these groups are like that and yes, they are on Facebook but I've seen them in person too. I've seen the people that have said "put them to the guillotine" in fucking person. Same people. Is that not a communist ideal? Killing landlords? Or am I off base? Regardless of what the ideals are here, I oppose them. I should not have said communist. That is a word that always gets things hung up and I apologize. There are also pieces of legislation being pushed that could really, really hurt me on a personal level with my business. The won't pass right now, but who knows what the future will hold.

Here's an FYI. As a landlord, property owner, business owner, anyone who signs a legal document with me is going to be held to that document. That means, there is no way a governing body can take that away without stripping my rights away. If that happened, I and many others would be geared up for a tortious interference lawsuit targeted at all who directly are interfering with contractual obligations. That being said, my tenants that I currently have are all paying me rent thankfully still, even if it's half (which I did to try and help out, so that mean I took in half the amount I normally would for this last month). The only way I was able to do this and not have issues is to refinance all of my loans and reset the clock on them by at least a year. So, I received a deferral on all of my notes but one. I still have to pay Escrows, contractors, utilities...etc. I'm not saying I'm awesome for doing what I did, but I thought I did the right thing. I would hope people would see it that way. If I could have, I would have just waived rents completely but all but two people I rent two are still doing ok right now and I have to pay bills still.


So, I'm a conflicted man. I get the hostility. I do. I thought a lot on all of this last night after reading the comments.


My plans going forward have been to get out of this business completely. I hate being a part of something so many hate and I honestly hate spending every dime I make to fix things that other landlords left in disrepair for decades.


I'm not sure what to think about things anymore.

Those posts in the groups you're talking about with little advocating guillotines and stuff? That totally sucks. Nobody should advocate violence, and in the current system which has private renting as a major source of housing, it's crazy to hold that on any individual private landlord, unless they are engaging in shitty practices. Certainly I have no problem with landlords who behave nice, I know multiple nice people who rent out properties and I'm sure you're one of the good guys.

I think the issue is conflating that behaviour and "communism" with the democratic party and biden in particular, who is uh, not exactly ready to man the guillotines to execute landlords or other business people. Even by the standards of the democratic party. It's not really the same thing.

I mean.... individually not so different as people but on health care, gun control (I know we just had a mass shooting in the most unlikely place in the entire country but that’s pretty rare here), taxes, military, LGBTQ/human rights..... we are pretty different! I won’t say our system is perfect and there are a lot of things I don’t agree with however.... I mean I’m as shocked as anyone that our Premiere, conservative Doug Ford who I would never vote for ever has actually done a pretty good job managing this whole pandemic. Also it’s fair to say a two party system like the US is not representational of “most people” but our “three party system” is even worse given the two left wing parties just split the vote from each other and you get a boring schmuck like Justin Trudeau in office.....

One reason people despise landlords is the quaint notion that it's the tenant's job to buy the building for the landlord--i.e. your rent collected should cover the payments on the property--who then justifies rent-gouging as "the cost of doing business." where i sit that looks like ripping people off so the landlord gets property essentially for free.
