Man, those have shot up over the last few years. I remember seeing them dirt cheap for ages with really mixed reviews, but now they're always super pricey. Same with the Budda and Mesa tube pedals from back in the day. Wonder why such a big shift in opinion/desirability.

My guess is that shift to smaller and smaller rigs for a lot of "tones" types. Funny I had a Budda up for sale for a long time... I should it for what I payed for it 10 years ago :idk: So also I think it's just wishful thinking.. The Buddas are not worth it unless you play blues/doom, they have a very distinctive sound and the gain is not very flexible, and, they don't take other pedals well.. the Mesa V Twin though are pretty badass sounding despite the stupid channel switching setup.. What I find funny is how now one line the rack version is really praised and my guitarist had one. It sucked. It never got enough gain or character. They traded it for a line6 and ended up using a marshall jmp1 for a long time

Still.. the call for tube pedals is strong.. even if most of them are snake oil..

My other guess is that the “low gain overdrive” crowd is on to them but can’t figure out how to use something with so much gain, and so they’ve been flipping them and hyping them to justify the increased prices. As compared to when these were new and everyone wanted to be metal — and they don’t really do that either. (As indicated in the last post, some of the various tube based pedals / racks just didn’t have enough gain for certain sounds.) Not playing well with other pedals and requiring weird power setups (the better BK Butler tube pedals need their own 120VAC plug) means that they don’t quite fit in to the modern world of lots of cheap pedals, multi-FX, etc.

That’s my take, anyways. I’ve wanted a Black Butler Tube Driver for a long time but the 4 knob version is only getting more expensive.

Yeah, so many don't really even use the tube(s) or just starve them. I had the Tube King and Tube King Comp and the drive from the starved plate design sounded kinda gross in those tbqh. I do have a bunch of the EHX tube pedals, H&K Roto, Fryette EF86 pedals that are pretty killer, though. Would like to try Effectrode's stuff, too.

Maybe it's all Kingsley's fault? Jester and Constable waitlist crowd searching for alternatives? Never played his pedals but I do regret not snagging one of his AC30ish amps back when they were reasonably priced, sounded gorgeous.

I snagged a couple of Kingsley during a weird trough just before prices exploded, and you could grab v.1s used for a significant discount. I don't think I paid as much for two used as you would pay for one new these days. They're nice, but kinda...straight? I like the Page more than the Jester, but I like the Fryette stuff much more.... I don't really have an itch to try any more though. :idk:

The Damage Control preamp pedals run the tubes at full voltage. The driven tones on the Liquid Blues are fine though they don’t hold my memory, but I’m trying to see if I can build a base tone around it as a clean front end between pedalboard and rack—it’s really nice and kind of pretty studio clean tone, detailed and layered and full, tho “Fuck Your Clean Tone” and I’m not sure it’ll play nicely with fuzz and ring mod and crazy mangling yet. (I need a less crazy year for getting this all to gel.)

If they reposted those as early DBA pedals they could sell each for $500+.

Anyone know enough to say if this is truly the prototype of the Rocket?

It’s not — looks like it was built by “Devi Ever: CYMRU”, which is Life Is Unfair having licensed to build her circuits. That “proto” sold on reverb last year.

Those switches are extremely large. They make 24mm pots look tiny.
