Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I think I sort of hate Just Friends? I had it racked up for about a year or maybe a bit less. I used it a lot as a modulation source but never really understood what it was doing? I tried to use it as an audio source but it never really sounded that good? Maybe I need to read that exhaustive "tech doc" the company put out? I don't know. It's in a drawer now. Good luck to all Just Friends users and future users.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
The technical map for Just Friends is pretty essential IMO. It's surprisingly accessible compared to the "manual." And there are a lot of interesting patch ideas that can be refreshing when you get into a rut.
But then not every module is for every person. I was slow to understand the Mannequins way but am all on board now. Except W/. Still need a good demo/technical map to sell that one to me.

Day 03 of No Work All Fun Makes Ben A Bit Blegahshhrhrj'd. today was all about...
01) finishing up stands setup wiring hide the cables
02) getting the Minilogue XD Module in and immediately emailing DetMod about a return. i want it sooooo bad, but need to not spend on gear now.
03) playing with Patterns inside Tracks on Pyramid WHICH I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW EXISTED WHEN I HAD ONE LAST TIME. loving P-Squiggly. would not mind having a Seq for drums, Squarp for melodies. but that's way in the future. once things are settled enough again to ACQUIRE, going to grab a XD, Sirin and need an outboard mixer.

Very cool video. The Pyramids looks crazy.
The Chronoblob has nearly completed me. But I still want Rings, which I can fit if I ditch my Disting and get the nanoRings. But I hate all the tiny fiddly nanoRings layouts. So I'd have to replace my Batumi or VCA with smaller versions. And I like both of those

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Just listened to all your Quarantine jams and really dig them, Behndy!
The Pyramid does look really cool. I've been thinking more about some sort of master MIDI controller for my setup. I bought a NDLR to pretty much do this, and it's alright, but I don't love it. I think I'm running into some latency issues with it (not sure if user error yet) and the fact that there's no gate length for the drone and pad parts is a huge let down. I did start messing with some of the internal LFOs in the NDLR and they really made the motif tracks more organic sounding. I might have to check out some videos on the Pyramid, though. I've always been a bit interested in it, but never thought I had a proper use for it, but now that I am hardware gear only and no modular, I think I might have a use for it.

Yeah I could never get behind the nanoMutable products. The original layouts were all pretty much perfect for me. A little bigger than they had to be clearly, but the nanos are all way too cramped. Too bad there's not really any middle groundcoldbrightsunlight wrote:The Chronoblob has nearly completed me. But I still want Rings, which I can fit if I ditch my Disting and get the nanoRings. Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yeah I was looking for maybe a 10hp or 12hp version but no such luck. But as it stands I still couldn't fit that in my case
so maybe I'll try out a nano

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
This version of nanoRings is not too small or fiddly. I use it everyday in a 42 hp lunchbox and can always grab the right knob / interact with the module successfully.

I just don't like those little, tiny knobs. I like big knobs that I can grab with my big fingers

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
yurp. some stuff, like Marbles, is kinda shit when it's tiny. Edges is workable if you never change anything. the Atom (forget the huge MI osc that Rings is a section of?) looks like a disassssster.
but i love the nRings. i had 3, gave one to a bud.
ColdYetBrightYetWarmMyButtsSunlight - Chrono is the BEST! love that you can do stutter grabs and change speed without changing pitch and just BEAUTIFUL.
i don't know what the NDLR is! i hated the Pyramid the first time i had it, get it this time, and it's the first time in awhile i've sat down with a piece of kit and did... thought exercises? will make a sequence just to see what happens when you extend it out 4 bars, copying the pattern across, then cut it to 1 bar, then move it out? does it keep the data from those 3 bars? does it erase them? WHO KNOWS! GOTTA FIDDLE!

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
This is a NDLR: https://conductivelabs.com/
It's basically a MIDI controller that lets you control 4 parts in key; a drone part that is 1-3 notes, a pad part that is a ridiculous number of notes that can be chained to multiple devices, and two motif parts that are monophonic sequences. The main buttons on the unit then let you select chords and chord types that all 4 parts will follow. It's basically a combination of a MIDI controller and cheating on your music theory exam.
Overall, it's really cool, but there are drawbacks. I'm kind of just leaning on syncing all my devices and just programming each one separately, which is rather feasible since they all have really good workflows and sequencers. I would also be able to put the money into a tenor guitar, which I am really gassing for because I've been watching too many Warren Ellis videos lately...

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yeah this one looks sort of OK and I'll probably go for it? I do hate those small knobs though. Am ok with them for attenuvertors but I like something bigger for direct parameter control. But in a small case sacrifices must be made.mr. sound boy king wrote:This version of nanoRings is not too small or fiddly. hm. Another vote for it.behndy wrote:yurp. some stuff, like Marbles, is kinda shit when it's tiny. Edges is workable if you never change anything. the Atom (forget the huge MI osc that Rings is a section of?) looks like a disassssster.

Yeah I have more been playing with the pitch change speed setting and doing a lot of flanger noises but I will dig more into the other mode at some point in all this quarantine fun.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
day 04 of DAMN I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER WHEN I DON'T SLEEP TILL 3 PM home stayings. the wife and i walked around a few blocks near our house, brought masks (we bought them like a year ago when all the fires were smoke trashing the Bay, wouldn't buy any now because DOCTORS NEED THEM FIRST PLEASE), kept our distance from humans, grabbed some palta from the local small grocery. doods and doodettes. support your local smaller places. Safeway and all will be fine.
messing around with making loops on the computer (this OH SO DRAMATIC pad is a NI Massive patch), popping them on the Black Box, sequencing with other loots (Cycles for drums, Pulsar for DRUMMMMMMMS) -

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
annnnnd Day 05 is more TB3 play, learning to switch between Pyramid Track Patterns quicker (even though i'm blocking the Pyramid all the time i'm wiggling the TB3 cutoff and resonance), and resampling a beat into Black Box and putting it through the slicer.
