About This Listing
ST. BLUES

STRINGS & THINGS IN MEMPHIS, INC.

CUSTOM BLUESMASTER II

1984

This is the “PINK” guitar in the “PINK” 1984 Billy Squier “Awful ‘Rock Me Tonite’ music video that ended his career.”

LOOK AT ATTACHED VIDEO TO LEARN THE STORY.

Maybe no one involved with the video had read “The Great Gatsby” (Tom Buchanan has been investigating Gatsby. “An Oxford man!” He was incredulous. “Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit.”. If someone had, they would have forgotten the “pink theme” of this video as soon as it was suggested.

Check out the video in this listing to see why this “Pink” video has been voted the “worst music video of all time”.

Pink sheets, Pink shirt, and Pink guitar. All gone Pinky bad.

I bought this guitar from a pawn shop as best I can remember. At least that fits the story about this guitar. Supposedly it went “missing” right after the filming of the video. But I am not sure about how many hands have been on this guitar. Look at the photos and see its excellent condition. It is close to new as close gets. There is no way this guitar could have passed through a lot of hands and still be so pristine. No way to tell now. And the guy who sold it to me did not mention its association with Billy Squier. I found that out thanks to a couple of folks who recognized it (one who worked at S&T). And under the pickguard is written #1 on the top. According to everyone I know who was associated with S&T during this time period, IT WAS THE ONLY ONE.

THE SAINT BLUES GUITAR WORKSHOP: "a feel and a sound you have to experience to understand"-the motto of ST. BLUES GUITAR WORKSHOP in Memphis, TN.

The original early 1980's St. Blues Custom, Strings and Things et al guitars from this early time period were among the best American guitars ever built. Their history is well told. But they still fail to get the respect deserved. So, "experience their feel and sound" so that you can "understand" their greatness. Among my collection of over 1000+ vintage and custom guitars, I consider these vintage St. Blues guitars to be among the most underappreciated and undervalued instruments in the collectibles marketplace. I expect that will change-because it should (along with Standel, Kustom, Veillette Citron, and other great American brands).

THIS GUITAR.

My item# 887

SN: 35080

Built by John Evans. I was told that this is the BOX TOPS' John Evans who became a well known luthier in Memphis after the Box Tops, et al.

It is a Model B-II, BLUESMASTER II.

It has two (2) "Slant Six" Saint Blues Single Coil-tapped Hand Wound pickups "controlled by 'Push-Pull' volume and tone and a 3-way pickups selector switch". "The Push-Pull" feature allows you to select two different levels of output from each pickup." "The tone ranges from raunchy to window clear."

Body wood is solid ASH.

BODY is bound.

Tele-style bridge (by GOTOH).

NECK is MAPLE.

Fingerboard is MAPLE.

Tuners are KLUSON.

SOUND: Plays like a telecaster and sounds like a telecaster but better than a telecaster.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD CONDITION. Shows very little wear. Has usual dings, dents, scratches, etc. that come with age and light playing.

COLOR: "MARY KAY/SHELL PINK" or "CADILLAC PINK". You decide.

Comes with case-not original.

Weighs 7.4 lbs.

Buyers outside continental USA, please ask for a shipping quote before buying this guitar.

MY GUARANTEE.

Easy. Money-back guarantee. No questions asked.

Buy it. Get it. Try it out for 3 days and nights (72 hrs). If, for any reason, you are not happy with it, pack it up and ship it back to me for a full refund. Nothing can be easier than that.

So if you are ready to end your career, buy this guitar.

Do I need to post a disclaimer at the start of the thread?

For fun but for real.
Fender 1957 champ reissue with papers and cover
Ehx big box deluxe memory man from 2001 or so.
Greco 1976 vintage spec Strat (vintage tuners, low frets, paf neck and original middle and bridge)

If you want tone this is it. You're buying all three in this combo listing. I will not break it up.

This is an extraordinary guitar not because of the brand or style, it is because this was the guitar Stevie Ray Vaughan SRV was holding in a photo of his first recording session at the age of 15 years old. Here is the information about it's significant history from the Letter of Authenticity.

Re: Royal Artist Bruno electric guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughan significance

I personally acquired the above-referenced item at a guitar show from a person who lived in San Antonio, Texas. It has been in my possession/control since this 2010 purchase. I have thoroughly evaluated the guitar and its history and have concluded this is the same guitar with which Stevie Ray Vaughan posed in the studio photo with the Cast of Thousands band for the Dallas-area compilation LP, A New Hi.

The history: The guitar’s story originated at Tempo 2 Studio, where young Stevie posed with it for the local band, Cast of Thousands’ promotional studio photo. Interestingly, Stevie actually played his own Gibson guitar on the band’s recordings but, either on a whim or at the photographer’s suggestion, substituted this guitar in the photo. This Dallas studio recording is the upcoming legend’s first professional audio recording.

The guitar was later taken to San Antonio, where it spent decades safely stowed away in a box under the original owner's bed. It was sold by the owner’s estate decades later, along with a note mentioning the Cast of Thousands’ 1970 recording. No one made the important Stevie Ray Vaughan/Cast of Thousands connection nor appreciated the historical significance of the guitar’s role in SRV’s career. The naive San Antonio buyer then offered it for resale at the guitar show I attended. As a Texas music historian, I recognized it as the long-forgotten guitar and immediately purchased it for my personal collection. This guitar was recently featured prominently as part of the popular Stevie Ray Vaughan display at the Texas Musicians Museum.

I'd rock this hard. Is "The Tears of Baby Jesus" a real band or just a descriptor. Could I get a setup like this and start the band then claim the tone?

dubkitty wrote:not for nothing, but Doug Irwin suffered massive brain damage in an automobile accident which made him an unsympathetic plaintiff in the notoriously ugly, eventually successful lawsuit known among Heads as the "Jerry's Guitars" case and which contributed to the split in the ex-members when GDP asserted ownership though Jerry left the guitars to Doug in his will and Phil Lesh opposed them. Doug was barely coherent and often inappropriate during trial. he's more of a face nowadays as everything Dead-adjacent becomes mainstreamed and even has a Facebook page, but the last thing i saw he'd built was quilted maple stash boxes and his site only has shirts and stickers.
Well atleast he's not the guy who blew himself up in his garage. That man sure hires the weirdest luthiers

i know a guy in Florida who hunted Cripe's relatives and bought all the leftover projects from Cripe's shop, kind of like how Tony Rice found Clarence White's iconic D-28. he made a pretty penny a couple of years later selling them to guys from Dead tribute/copy bands when the Dead scene, being safely decedent, began going mainstream and people could make serious bank being this evening's 62% Garcia. IIRC he bought a fairly substantial patch of farmland in rural Florida with the proceeds.

see, i keep telling y'all i've had a really weird life...
