oh yeah igy. Twin minis would be sick tho. Also like running it stacked with something would be a good consideration still. Like you could run the mini as a fuzz sound stacked with something else and have stuff justbe crunchy or something with the mini off? makes for alot of flexibility. Most boosts i feel changes the texture of dirt anyways. I have kinda given up on getting the sounds I want with only one pedal ven if it isn't practical

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
great suggestions on stacking with the mini
I feel like it is very responsive to changes heading into it and also works well in the booster slot....
that said, it also seems like a Velcrobot or a used Velcroar might work well for your stated purposes
(lol, takes forever to post with a curious bird on your hand - so, yeah, what CBS said)

I have - picked up one used
imo it's definitely a nice pick but in no way worth even the used price i paid.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
fairly quiet and articulate attack (I got the TAD 60R)
picks are a weird wormhole for me considering i play fingerstyle the majority of the time on everything but mando
i like acetate for tone - i do like 'em thick, but at some point thick ones will start to chirp
love the feel of gravity picks but most of them are on the chirpier side
honestly, i thought the Dunlop Primetones were pretty comparable and not just because they're the same color (ya gotta wonder if Dunlop was doing that intentionally to cut into BlusChip's share of the premium market).
i did a deep dive into picks last spring because i didn't want to invest in any real gear not knowing what the pandemic would be....
definitely didn't find a price-quality correlation.
one strange hit for me? coconut shell - who knew?
i actually really enjoy both the hand feel and glide over the strings of V Picks but also found them on the chirpy side (which in general i don't like, but some times it works well with certain fuzzes for me)
found some good recs searching for "dark" picks on various forums
some others i like:
D'Andrea Pro Plecs
Dunlop Jazz Tone
Tusq (these are brighter and articulate but not too chirpy)
Dunlop Ultex and Delrin
non-branded "exotic" materials:
wood is just not durable enough for me, but some of them sound good - usually not chirpy (janka hardness is no guarantee of durability against abrasive wound strings)
horn is quite good - durable enough and articulate/bright but with good fundamental without chirpiness and very nice feel in the hands and against the strings
rubber is quite interesting on bass; i like it better than felt
most metals are pretty good and not as bright or chirpy as i would have thought - but the market in metal picks is coin- and Brian May/Billy Gibbons-obsessed so that's (really really) annoying
(favorite metal pick is an aluminum Moroccan coin so i'm guilty too lol)
most polished stones annoy me - bad string feel, bright, chirpy and usually redonk overpriced/made by people who don't have the first notion about the importance of taper or edge
really liked bamboo for tone and better durability than any other wood, but the set i picked up had the most annoying tip shape for me - it constantly trips me up, and the other edges are way too thick for my liking - i'll probably shop around for some other bamboo picks at some point
fuqq poachers warez like ivory and tortoise shell - i just wanna play - leave your scrimshaw in the nantucket whaling museum and rip leslie west (though i may have stepped in it myself by buying "horn" picks (which i think are "buffalo" as in water buffalo not bison)
Clayton seems to be an affordable brand for trying out exotics
honestly tho good old-fashioned environment-degrading petro-derivatives are cheaper and usually better
it's wise to be skeptical - the snake oil index is high in pick world
good luck intrepid voyager

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I agree on the stuff I’ve tried the same you.. yes the Buffalo horn picks are water Buffalo, I’m not super into them, I have a cow horn one too.. bone picks (cow like nuts are made of) are better sounding to me and don’t warp like horn. My favorite metal pick is one I made out of 2mm brass that tapers down to thin at the point. Graphite picks are weird, I have some telefunken ones, they wear like cloth and fray a bit, not chirpy though. I’m not sure where I want to go really.. my go to are Dunlop ultralex or tortex tri shape 1.14mm mainly because minimal chirp on bass and they, do, not, break
i think though I will always be trying different materials of picks and slides.. it’s fun

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!

interesting - i thought about trying cow bone but reverted to my degenerate fingerstyle ways

playing with picks does always remind me of the importance of the attack point to tone, so that's good
\plus, i'm more aware of the things i can do easily with a pick that i have to struggle with fingerstyle, and now i'm more willing to get off my high horse and pick up a pick

but overall, same same - picks and slides both it's just fun to hunt down and try different materials

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
I just ordered dunlop's graphite picks for uuh.. reasons.. Definetly not well versed in picks cause, like dandolin, I play fingerstyle. Tho recently I tried some huge clayton pick against my regular dunlops with the gators and it was so different.

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
next time i want to divert a pedal purchase urge maybe i'll seek out a Telefunken or something (it can double for tube rolling too)
i got a pick puncher as a gift once - you can take old credit/gift cards and punch them out in the one bog-standard shape they provide (which actually isn't the objectionable part because i'm quite ok with ye olde bog standard medium large-ish rounded triangle mostly), but wallet cards and driver's licences make pretty unspectacular picks. i've thought about trying business cards or pedal boxes for ultra lofi rubber-bridge tone for the two minutes they'd last (then my lovey would probs take my cast offs and coat them in resin for jewelry or bead curtains or someaught - "upcycling!"
tarot card picks anybody?)

Re: The Whatever Thread .. For Gear!!
i've been playing with heavy plastic picks for so long now that i don't think i could adapt to anything else. they're as fundamental to "my sound" as the tone settings on the amp. in the 1980s/early 90s i used David Grisman signature mandolin picks about 1 mm thick in an odd oblate shape that lends itself well to the kind of fast tremolo strumming you do when playing mando chords. the original black "David Grisman" ones were better and a bit thinner than the mother-of-tortoise "Dawg" signature picks which replaced the originals sometime in the 90s. i still have examples of both...i have a plastic container that once held a single serving of macaroni salad which i've kept my picks in since the early 80s. i literally have picks i've had since the mid/late 70s, so i can get more or less any attack characteristics i want. occasionally a light pick is good for subtler phrasing and especially for quiet rhythm parts; i particularly like the transparent blue 751-sized Wabash picks, which were common as dirt in the Midwest in the 70s but then disappeared until i found some at Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz in the mid-00s. from there i went to Fender 751 Extra Heavy, and then to Heavy. as you can see, a very broad range of attack and dynamics is very important to me. Charlie Pastorfield bough a big bag of Heavys by mistake and gave them to me, so i should have enough picks to last the rest of my life. but for $90 that pick should play the guitar for me, polish it, and change the strings when necessary. why spend that kind of money on something you lose in the dryer?
