Re: The headsup sweet shit on ebay thread....
I'm not surprised, but I am a little surprised that people hit the streets so fast to buy up everything, even the arcades cards. Flipper culture is so gross. Then again, announcing that you aren't making any more pedals the day after dropping 2 new ones is a great way to sell out on the new ones and get that investment back. I also get it that it's not about money, but he is leaving a TON of money on the table. Even to do one more round of his full lineup...outsource the manufacturing to someone who knows it/does it and cha ching. That said, knowing what I know about the supply chain...we haven't seen nothing yet, and this was probably a smart move as I think some of these small companies aren't going to have product to sell next year.
I heard he announced that there is one more arcades card coming out somewhere in the comments of the instagram post.

The flipping thing is pretty wild, especially in recent times where its super common in the pedal world.
As for building pedals. I think for a lot of small builders it is about money in the end, especially if building pedals is or becomes your only income source. I don't mean this in a negative way at all, it's just reality.
You can make money selling pedals "sales number wise" but when you add up the value of time spent and overhead costs on top of parts cost your hourly rate is poor at best unless you sell in very large volumes. Especially compared to working for someone else.

I loathe flipping and am pretty vocal about it. I think it's a mixed bag for the little guys since to a certain extent, flippers in of themselves drive demand by artificially inflating value and thus making more flippers want to "invest" in the pedal...and it makes it more desirable for the curious since they know they can get their money back or make a few bucks. It's everything that's gross and slimey about capitalism.
I just made my first DIY and it's oodles of fun, but I can see making 100 over the span of a week losing it's charm.

There was a fascinating podcast called the ruffian show that interviewed pedal builders. If it's still up the Alexander pedals and Joel from Chase Bliss are great listens, especially the Alexander one because Matthew gets into the purchasing and profit margin area of running a business and the challenges involved. This was pre-pandemic so I'm sure with supply shortages things are different but a good listen either way.imJonWain wrote:The flipping thing is pretty wild, especially in recent times where its super common in the pedal world.

The problem with Cooper "just doing one more run of everything" is all his pedals rely on the Spin Semiconductor FV1 which has been largely unavailable for the last 6 months. A shortage of that one part prevents manufacturing of any more pedals.

looks like it was from a few years ago. Most of the social media links seem dead. Trying to find a working link to it...seems like a great show.

Great point. I'm a bit concerned that a lot of these little guys are going to be in big trouble next year. We aint seen nothing yet from the supply chain problems that have been brewing before the pandemic.whoismarykelly wrote:The problem with Cooper "just doing one more run of everything" is all his pedals rely on the Spin Semiconductor FV1 which has been largely unavailable for the last 6 months. About what you'd expect from an instrument that's $69.99.
It really depends on what you want it for though. If you want a sound source to beat the shit out of, it's fine. If you have any interest in actually playing "lap steel", however, another $150'd probably get you something decent to play on.

Re: The headsup sweet shit on ebay thread....
Yeah, I was thinking and have solidly settled on it being a hard pass. The right time for me to have bought a vintage lap steel for under $200 is 20 years ago, but I’ll either splurge or do DIY. (I’ve had thoughts about doing something with Danelectro-like semi-hollow construction with pine or poplar frame and hardboard front and back. The value of my time into that will be more than $70, though.)

Not sandwich construction, but I always liked the look of these Danelectro lap steels:
