So it's possible to make the Supercollider even more tweakable than the stock version? Amazing.gila_crisis wrote:Since I was so curious about this Hizumitas "hype" and after taking a look at the schematics I've found online and some thought and calculations, I decided to modify the tone control my mighty EA Supercollider, since I noticed that by changing only 1 component in the tone pot circuit (the cap in the high pass filter side, for the tech-nerds), you can mimic the Elk/Hizumitas tone behavious quite easely.
I think this is the stage of the circuit which has the biggest impact to recraete the Elk tone. And since the Earthbound has additional controls for Mids, Bass/Mass and Clipping diodes, there are already enough knobs to play and fine tune to taste.
I did some tests and tweaking and I was so pleased by the results, that I decided to instal an additional switch to toggles between the stock 10nF cap and a 2.2nF for the Elk tone (1nF would nail the ELK 1:1, but for my taste it was generally too scooped and dark with Tone fully CCW).
The Elk/Hizumitas setting is waaaay more scooped, has a kind of more vintage taste, and I understand why many feel it has a mid boost, since also fully closed it still retains a nice clarity: and it's never muddy, too dark or dull. On the other hand the stock Supercollider tone has a lot more grinding mids, presence and a modern feel.
Funny thing and cool part this mod: the tone of the Hizumitas setting with Mids fully CW is very similar to and almost matches that of original Supercollider setting with Mids fully CCW. So it's like having an additional switch to have 2 mid knob range!
