A pink Squier Bass VI arrived today - not had time to set it up yet but I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

I might see if I can find a lighter set of strings though.

Initially I went the other direction with my Bass VI and had it set up with heavier flatwound strings (100 low E, I think) to make it more of a "proper" bass, which was appropriate for the band I was in at the time, but once that band was done I found that I never played the Bass VI. A couple of months ago I was thinking about selling it off, but decided to string it with baritone strings (68 low string, tuned to G) and now it's one of my most-played instruments. And I had an MXR BC108 fuzz that wasn't doing anything for me and was on the chopping block, but it turns out it has a great relationship with the Bass VI. I never knew what people were talking about with volume knob cleanup and all that before.

I got a G4 from our gas crazy buddy Max and that thing fucking wrecks. It is so good. So that's got my high gain covered. Figured it was so good that I want to try a G3 and see if it can make a good marshally lower gain sound. But who am I trying to kid. I'm just going to slam the gain on it...

There's a lot of overlap between the two, having had both at the same time. I kept the G4 and passed on the G3 in the end - I liked having the chugga option around and the more traditional marshall-in-a-box thing wasn't as exciting to me. That said, I have a pal who swears by the G3 with the gain set at min as his preferred boost-with-grit. They both rule, they can kinda do the same thing to some degree, but at their extremes they're different. So I guess you should buy them all and get the green one too.

Hopefully everything goes right but I bought another bass yesterday. Should be shipped during the weekend from across the globe so hopefully I get it within a month.

I sold my Access Virus Indigo 2 and added some cash to buy a Meridian aural ii 6 string fretless bass from some guy!

Handmade in Italy, Ash body, maple neck, macassar ebony fretboard, MAMA magnetic pickup + piezo saddles with blender, active and passive mode.
Really looking forward to receiving it! Hopefully everything goes smoothly and I also don't get absolutely anihilated by custom fees.

This spiky l'il soundmaker (called the Sound Urchin) showed up today. Sort of an exploded kalimba.



There's a smaller version that's fully passive, but I got the bigger one that has a built-in preamp. Gives a pleasingly lightly overdriven sort of sound, perfect to run into the pedals. Plus it's orange, so it goes with Søvnløs.

I did not know about Meridian at all, I just stumbled on it while searching for a 6 string bass. I am beyond excited! Being handmade in Italy makes it really cool to me for some reason

Never heard of Mama pickups before but they seem great, and that wood bridge and fingerboard design are awesome imho.

Also I've looked on their facebook page and while I did not find the weight for mine, I saw quite a few 6 string aural and they all weighted 3.7kg!! Correct me if I'm wrong but that is quite light for a 6 string bass!

Oh and the seller did not mention it but I found out later (he confirmed) about the graphtech piezo with mix knob. I was so glad because I really love that piezo fretless double-bass-esque tone.

Having decided that I have all the pedals, guitars and amps I could possibly need, you'd think I could finally relax, but no.

The big problem is that I have spare funds and a desire to spend a little of it here and there, so no matter how determined I might be to draw a line and say "that'll do" I'm still looking around and finding other instruments to consider.

I'm still making my mind up as to whether I really want an electric cello, but in the meantime I've found at least one more thing to add to the pile and have bought this:

I loved the G4 when I had it, however I way prefer the gain tones I get from the BE OD and I am also the same when it comes to setting gain levels. It’s either all or none

Last week I received a pedal that I was very eager to try out for a few years now: the EBS Stanley Clarke Signature Wah. Since a friend at the BossAreaForum is so happy with his EBS Billy Sheehan Signature Drive I thought that I would love this red beauty. Sadly I don't. And that's not because of the sound quality.



Overall it is a very well-built wah pedal that has a good (high) weight, plus a very cool function to adjust the pedal torque (at first my exemplar was too loose, always automatically tilting back to the maximum position). There are four modes and two controls plus a passive/active switch. You can even decide to have true bypass or a volume pedal function if you turn off the wah. And it was designed with my bass guitar hero Stanley Clarke.



So what's not to love? The sound per se is great and the different functions are cool, but there is a noticeable and rather strong volume drop, no matter if I use the active or passive mode or other pedals before the wah. I use a passive Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass with normal output, so I don't see a problem with the instrument itself. Sadly there is no way to adjust the effect volume. I saw that some users are also complaining about that in bass guitar forums. A trimpot for the volume had been a great feature and I reckon that it had been easy to implement it on the ciruit board.

Another thing that I think is a clear mechanical design flaw: whenever the footswitch gets pressed down the rack gear pushes against the bottom plate, because it is a few millimetres too long for the height of the pedal. The bottom plate always gets bent down. I have never had a wah pedal that does this. It's absolutely weird.

So this first EBS pedal might have already been my last one. I expected so much better quality. Especially since a new pedal costs over 300 EUR!

Wow. Is it in a key?

No, it's pretty random melodically, aside from the obvious longer spikes at the bottom being lower than the shorter ones up top. From playing around a bit yesterday I found you can play tunefully as long as you hunt around a bit than find three or four spikes that you want to work with.

Need to get my hands on some sandpaper for some rasp/rub textures. Metal fingerpicks were inneresting too.
