Anyone else try a Fuzz War?

Post by FuzzHugger »

I just tried a DBA Fuzz War for the first time yesterday...anyone else tried one?

Interesting experience! DBA definitely has a different way of doing things!

First, it's bigger than my head:

(my head is behind it)

It's got a huge amount of output...the volume control goes from off at 7 o'clock to unity gain at 7:30 o'clock...I think 9 o'clock would blow my amp! I'd imagine it could blow a pedal that comes after it, but I'm not about to experiment!
(not sure why the decision to have that kind of output...maybe to make an amp feedback by turning it up? Just don't leave it up or play a note with it up!!!)

The tone control seems to run the normal tone sweep between 7 and 11-12 o'clock...above that, it gets even thinner and brighter! I think that'd be a handy feature for guitarists who want a tone control that extends way further into the upper range.

I wouldn't call it a wall-of-fuzz type sound...overall, more a traditional-flavor fuzz, more mids and highs (with scooped mid-lower-mids), but there is a nice underlayer of bass on the lower settings.

The thing I liked about it, and the most unique thing about it, was this sort of electric-fizz undertone, which might be a love-it/hate-it thing depending on the person. But it's kind of cool.

I haven't experimented with the internal gain trimpot, and I'm not sure where it's set...anyone tried it?

I'm interested to hear what other people think!

There is always a ton of extra space in dba pedals. those DBA guys must have big hands, and you know what they say about guys with big hands....................................................................................................big feet. :whateva:

They should sell em in smaller enclosures and charge less! ;)

 Woah! Think there was something wrong with it?
I've tried two, and I'm talking the most output I've ever heard in a pedal.

Definitely...it wouldn't fit the Place to Bury Strangers niche.

On a sorta different note, I was looking at the DBA site, and under the about section I noticed this:

"List of companies that based pedals on ideas from Death By Audio! What an honor! These are all great companies/..Electrocution revolution!

Effector 13
Napalm Effects
Delorean Musical
Loooper
Audible Disease
Tone Factor
+++Many More" :idk: what to think 'bout that.

Hah yea I saw that...

They must have a huge market in Brooklyn, cause I really don't know of a whole lot of people who care a whole lot about what they put out.... He must be making money though. Maybe from APTBS? Oh Oliver... :whoa:

Sometimes I wonder if his enclosures are are so big to match his head...

On a side note, I'd really like to try the fuzz war and soundwave breakdown.

I'd need all of that extra output. I don't know why, put I have to crank my devi pedals output in order to get unity gain when i play through my valve king royal 8, which is a classA tube amp. On a solid state I have to turn them down a lot. And on my Peavey Classic 50, its in between. :idk:

people do seem to love DBA in brooklyn... i sell stuff at a GREAT local store called main drag music and my stuff has been selling ok, but DBA stuff goes real fast, the buyer told me. if anyone is in brooklyn or comes around to play a show, i definitely recommend a visit to the store - they also have a good amp/guitar/solid state repair shop - they do a TON of amp repairs in there...

funny about the fuzz war volume... my TAFM has that much volume too (eek!) but i have an internal trimmer to attenuate it. on a few guitars though, the volume is a lot lower than on other ones, so we must have a similar impedance issue with our pedals...? no idea

my friend's band is actually going to be supporting APTBS in europe, i think. they get a ton of hype over here as well... nice to have a pedal company, DIY show space and a band - they basically all promote each other!

tom - if you want, i've got a fuzz war schem you could check out
the internal trim is for the "drive" or fuzz amount i guess...

The Fuzz War is on my pedal board since about 6 months now, I love it !!

What I would recommend is to have it and a Devi Ever Rocket.
The Rocket is great for rhythm and the Fuzz War for solos... they are quite complementary.

The Fuzz War is all right but if you want DBA fuzz, go with Supersonic Fuzz Gun. Holly jesus that thing is soo bad ass, and you can get the Fuzz War tone out of it I might add. There's a ton of different stuff you can do with it; hours of fun

I have beef with DBA. :idk:

I just don't think it's necessary to charge that much for a guitar pedal that doesn't have a whole lot of tonal options. :idk:

Also, that thing about all the pedal companies basing themselves off of DBA soured my mood towards them. It would be cool to live at Death By Audio though.

All the bullshit aside- I've met the DBA people in person before and they were really nice, normal dudes. Oliver makes some incredible fuzzes. His stuff might be super jacked as far as price goes. But, hey- no reason to take it personally. Wouldn't you much rather have a $95 Devi Ever noisemaker any day of the week? Thought so.
