bigchiefbc wrote:[rant] Why is it that American breweries (and liquor stores) only carry imperial-double-holy-shit-this-will-knock-your-teeth-out versions of any beer style? Whether its an IPA, a stout, a Belgian/trappist or whatever, Americans as a whole only seem interested in the most extreme expression of any beer style. If I just want a nice, balanced, well-made English bitter or a delicious Mild or German Alt or Vienna lager, or hell, even a fucking nice Munich-style lager, they're mother impossible to find. But if I want to find a mother-nutpunch-triple-IPA, or a 15% alcohol triple imperial stout, or a Belgian Quintuple, that's what everyone seems into. It's like as Americans, we are addicted to everything being fucking EXTREME. It's not enough for something to just be well-crafted and balanced and enjoyable. It would be like if the only types of porn you could get were DVDA-tranny-rape-gangbang with 500 dwarves. [/rant]
I don't know where you're looking but it sounds like you've got a lot of pent up anger about people brewing things they enjoy/are easier and quicker to make.

I'm not angry that people like this stuff. More power to you. I'd just like to be able to find the other styles. And believe me, I've tried to find other liquor stores. I've hit every one of them in a 10-mile radius. Anything that carries craft beer is 99% IPAs and crazy big stouts. And the standard belgian trappists. And that's about it. I guess there's just no market for it.

It's just the trend (or maybe the new tradition?) in American beer-making. The good news is that there are those breweries that make it their business to go against the grain (get it? Grain? Beer? HA!), and supply something more nuanced or low-key that isn't watery or bland. I suspect that between the two of us, we've found over 3/4 of the ones in the Northeast.

Sounds like your liquor stores are kinda weak. I checked out the liquor laws in RI and yeah that's gotta be frustrating.
It IS a big trend right now to have a big-flavored IPA/whathaveyou, and I touched on it before -- smaller breweries have a much easier time making ales than lagers since they take less time, among other reasons.
SO yeah, the big, bold flavors are popular at the moment and the market is saturated overall. I don't know how mild you want to go but I promise you it's out there somewhere.

It's funny you used the term "mild", personally, I'd love to find an actual Mild Ale. I've never seen one or had one in my life that I didn't brew myself. Just an example
pelliott wrote:I meant more a beer that doesn't have such an in-your-face interface but now that you mention it a Mild Ale sounds pretty intriguing.
Yeah, I knew what you meant. I just figured it would make a good example. Anyways, all of this aside, this has all just been me going on in my impotent ranting. We can return to our regularly scheduled program.
