Man, fuck group projects.
And peer review, too. Peer review is just an awkward circlejerk, there's never any real criticism or challenge.

Make Drunken Noodles instead--easier to cover up the lack of fish sauce in that than Pad Thai.

KB, aren't you a suicide counselor?

Can't you just, like, tell them to kill themselves and hang up?

I briefly worked with a woman who had previously had a graveyard call center gig for male enhancement pills.

So peeps used to call her up and start, uh, proving that they didn't need the pills. And she couldn't hang up on them.

So she used to get all concerned and "sir, are you ok? I have your personal information, the police are on their way."

Take it or leave it :idk:

Haha yeah we use that shit on prankers who don't block their phone number (we don't get their information, just a general location). I mean, we don't actually send the police, but it's awesome scaring the shit out of some stupid fuckheads.

First serious doubt about economics and grad school:
A professor at one of the meet and greet dealies I went to before the quarter began jokingly said that our courses this year (core micro, core macro, and econometrics) could more accurately be called: lies, damned lies, and statistics. I laughed at first, but I'm beginning to think that might be frighteningly accurate.

One of the big reasons I wanted to go to grad school in economics was because I wanted to see what was possible with economics modelling. I've always been told that in Economics the models are only there to put numbers to the intuition, and if the numbers don't match the intuition we need to revise our model. However, from the looks of it we are going to be taught the opposite of that.

They are throwing very highly developed models and highly abstract mathematically-based economic theories at us expecting this stuff to match our intuitions, as opposed to showing us ways to use these high-minded math skills to build complex models based on our intuitions. I am the nail that sticks out. Will I be pounded into conformity or pulled out and put to another purpose...

I don't think it would work out very well for me if I did. Their response would probably be, "what we're teaching you this first year are the tools economists use. We teach you these models because they've been tested against observations for over 100yrs and have been revised to more accurately reflect those observations. There's no point in reinvisioning models of society when we already have models that are perfectly capable of doing so."

To which my response would be, "the reason we have the models is because it's not efficient, possible, or even morally right in a lot of cases to make changes to society and study the results in real life. However, where we now have MMORPGs it would appear we're almost to the point where a mathematical model is unnecessary, because the restrictions we previously had on our ability to test our hypothesis are beginning to disappear. In other words, in a short time our ability to study mathematical models won't be as important as our ability to intuit the correct course of action."

This is part of the reason I'm going to grad school in Economics and a big part of my problem with the proffesion. 100 years ago political scientist and economist were very Yeah, I'm bad at it too... I'll just do the same and pretend I'm responding in a timely manner.

School's a lot of work; a lot of work. One of the professor apparently tries to get people to drop out of the program.. He seemed nearly one and the same. The big difference now is political scientists make their decisions based on historical/philosophical grounds, and economists make their decisions based on complexathematical models. I think that, in addition to the math, Economists need more importantly to learn political philosophy and ethics. Both are wildly important in interpreting what is and is not a good result in the model.

So, I'm studying economics with the hope of changing it for the better or at least so I can become an "economist" as I define it. Fuck the models and their unrealistiy rigid assumptions. I'm going to learn the method and use it to build better models that more accurately reflect my intuitions. *puffs out chest* Maybe in my second year, or over the summer, I'll take a course or two in philosophy.

i woke up today feverish and miserable, and i have a huge conundrum that i'mgoing to have to resolve. a friend of mine is helping me apply for a writing job in Charlottesville, VA. if they want to hire me i'll be faced with the dilemma of whether to stay with a known quantity here in Pocatello or to relocate yet again to the other side of the continent. Pocatello is quiet and peaceful, and i have a job that starts week after next, but it's a low-level job that doesn't really utilize my capabilities; the flip side of quiet and peaceful is also "dead." there's no music scene here at all, and i'm kind of stuck in a slum level of existence here where i may never meet anyone i really get on with. Charlottesville is much more vibrant--it's a real college town--and the job there would be more to my liking, but i just don't know if i have the strength to go through another transition including driving across the continent with my cat in the truck. what would you do, or suggest?
