Very nice, congrats! I'd most definitely put that in a headshell too, save your back. :thumb:

Does it still have 7072a power tubes? Then current production 7072a is kinda shitty so if you're ever looking to convert the power tube section/bias resistors go with the KT88s. They sound so fucking good in my V2. So good! I can only imagine they crush in a V4/VT-22.

The main reason to pull it isn't so much my back but that it'll spend most of its time on bass duty pushing 15s. The weight is a nice side benefit though. At ~100 lbs getting the motherfucker into my car then down into the basement was not a nice time.

Still has 7027a tubes, yes. Looks like all the tubes are original still or at least from the era. Not quite sure which direction to go if I change them but I've already got a 4xKT88 amp so not really looking for that. Maybe EL34s?

I had to replace the original Magnavox 7027s in my V4 and found a quad of JJs that ended up sounding really good. They seem to be a little tougher to track down, but I wouldn't mod for a diff tube type at this point. It's not dire straights as far as current 7027s go.

Great work! I miss running my Wretch Machine through that V2.

Holy Schnikes wrote:Got my V2 back from my tech today, so excited! He went through it methodically reflowing solder, changing caps, adding new toggles, installing new KT88s, adjusting bias, fixing the reverb jack, adding new (vintage correct) pilot lights, updating 3-prong plug, disconnecting polarity "death cap", and so on and so on. Nothing major but it needed a check up and it's 100% ready for the long haul now.

A good friend of mine retolexed the headshell and replaced all hardware and grill cloth. Then a local screen printer redid the control panel for me since most of the labeling worn off years ago and had since been replaced by marker scrawls. Couldn't find a good pic or pdf file anywhere of that V2 control plate graphic so he used my buddy's V4 as an example and created one from scratch using some graphic design program. Turned out super nice!

Here's a blurry ass photo of the before...

And after...

Pretty sure that's what ChillerThanMost has in his. Also, been wanting to do this to a friend's YBA-3.

I've posted this before, but I just got it back from my tech today after a couple of months and it's like having a new amp. Formerly had 6550's, now has KT-88s and I can tell the difference for sure. Hard to explain, but it definitely sounds beefer now with the KT-88s. Love this fucking amp, even if it does weigh a godamn ton.

My cats are happy to have it back too. :yay: My board is a work in progress, had some cables crap out on me and I've been too lazy to fix 'em back up yet.

Word. KT88s rule in my V2 as well. Just bigger but tighter bass response. I def prefer it to the 7027s or 6550s, no question.

Ugh, that VT-40 looks fucking rad. I've been wanting one for a while and I bet it kills with a pair of KT88's in there.

Also, to whoever posted about putting their VT-22 in a headshell, if you want to swap tubes but don't want KT88/6550 tubes, you can do a direct replacement from what you have in there with 6L6GC tubes. Just be weary of modern made tubes because they will not handle the voltage. I went through a quad of JJ's AND a quad of Ruby's in just two years before they both gave up on me due to the massive voltage shooting out of my early V4. I finally went with an old quad of Sylvania 6L6GC tubes and it was the best choice. Lasted long and sounded superb. No modifications needed if going from the original tubes.

and vegedge, glad you were able to step up to something with more power, I know you've been wanting to do that for a while. I set up my YBA-3 with 6550's. It is awesome. I play guitar through it because I have an SVT for bass, but it does great with either instrument. The mod to 6550's is kinda tricky but not difficult. It just requires replacing the screen grid resistors and beefing up the bias resistor for the right bias. If you really want to do it you can PM me and I can help you through it. If you take it in to a shop just make sure you know everything they are doing to the amp. Congrats again.

I've bought and sold a lot of amps but I recently picked up a Butcher and couldn't be happier.
