Oh I'm aware of his passing. bunch of people blowing up about it on facebook. people that I've known forever that had never said anything or breathed anything about the band.

one of the great things about not having Facebook is not having to see shit like that.

to be fair, you could have hung out with me a lot the past bunch of years and not heard me say much about the ramones cause they're not a band i often listen to anymore, if ever. but they were important to a very young me. the pop punk kind of stuff was never really my thing, but when i was first discovering punk (without the real existence of the internet) they were one of those bands that a kid in a conservative part of the country with no idea what to look for could find. and i latched onto it and wanted more. and a lot of those bands that were kind of there at the start of that thing that became a pretty important part of my life always held a special place for me. that was sort of the spirit of posting that. i figured it's probably a shared history with some of the other dudes that post here. i'm not trying to be all "i'm the biggest ramones fan in the world and life will never be the same again!"

and ryan, i agree. i've always had one foot in the punk scene and one foot in the metal scene. i get so annoyed with folks i know who get a dark throne tshirt and try and turn into something different and deny what they were.

I didn't really get into punk that much. Closest I got was probably D.R.I and bands like that. Which is weird because the band I was in before Flux was punk.
However, this should be in the how to fucking do it handbook for bands that don't suck.-

I killed my wall of speakers tonight. Came tumbling down and landed on my boards power. instant no guitar. Was pretty awesome.

Actually it fucking sucked but people seemed to like it and nothing broke, got it fixed and finished the set.

I didn't learn to play from The Ramones. Learned to play guitar from '80s hardcore and then Sabbath. What I learned from The Ramones is how to act like a real band on stage. how did you pull or knock the amps down? That's only happened to me once and that's cause I kinda lost my footing and jumped back right into my half stack at that time and it kept working perfectly so all I did was stand up on top of the cab and kept playing.

I grew up listening to classical music. When I started getting into anything that was guitar based it was stuff like Failure, Smashing Pumpkins...and very quickly after that it was straight into death metal with Suffocation. Cause I started getting a lot of cds via columbia house and they had a deal with Roadrunner so they carried shit like that... Obituary, Deicide. I basically really liked the cover and didn't know anything else and was completely blown away from there just kept digging for more.

I literally didn't even hear the Ramones till I joined a skramz band on bass and I would see people wearing ramones shirts all the time at shows... usually 14 year olds and I finally said I guess I'll go see what everyone sees in this band... Yea guess I would have had to been there, in my context I didn't give a ripe shit.

This. Facebook is useful and I have one, but holy shit it's like a case study in stupidity every time I open it.

It just seems to me there are three types of people that are into extreme metal. There's the people who grew up on punk and hardcore, who eventually wanted something stronger. I am one of those. Then there's the butt rock kids who eventually realized that RATT was not as bad-ass as they seemed in Jr. high, and moved on to something stronger. I'm not one of those kids although I did borrow Hit Parader from my classmates now and then. Thirdly there are the hipster/poseur/trend-sheep who were all about Jet and White Stripes until all their friends started rocking Venom and Burzum shirts. I have never been anything like those people. The Ramones are touted by the first and third types, the first out of genuine adoration and the third as a form of herd-bleating. Some of the second type do also appreciate The Ramones, as they have plenty of cross-cultural appeal, but I don't expect the butt rockers to automatically enjoy them.

This happened twice while I was on stage; once with my bass rig while playing a soul/ R&B gig, and once to the guitarist in my old death/thrash band. That time was actually awesome, cuz it was during the last couple of bars of our last song... I saw the audience's eyes get really wide and I thought "man we are killing it!" and then I looked over and saw his full stack waver and topple to the ground on the final note. It all survived the fall and was totally badass.

I refused to have a facebook up till 2 years ago because with selling my paintings at shows everyone just asked for my facebook regardless I have my own site for my paintings. Rarely ever sell anything on my website, with facebook I can sell up to 400 bucks worth of paintings just by doing a post of some new shit. I usually spare it out so I can have some stock when I do shows to sell. Which stating that I need to get back to painting.


And John, judge away doesn't change much of anything aside from your assessment of me which relates to nothing in my world. So it's all good.

I didn't get on Facebook until I was complaining to a friend about being unemployed, and he urged me to open an account and start networking. Well lo and behold, I did and within a couple of months a friend via FB hooked me up with a great job which lasted a couple of years and netted me a bunch of good money and good times. So there's that. YMMMV

And SLK, I don't judge your lack of Ramonesing as much as your tenure in a skramz band

I love shit like Pg 99 and City of Catepillar and Hot Cross. Can't help it. I liked that we were shoving in 15-20 riffs and transitions into a 2-3 min long song.

I hate Facebook.

I mostly hate it for all the people who suddenly want to be my friend. Listen, hub, 10 years ago we didn't give a fuck about one another and in that time span there hasn't been a single utterance... kindly fuck yourself into somebody else's digital space.

The only reason I have it is so that I can be an admin on any shows that I happen to book which is few and far between these days.

Unrelated note... Thou and the Body this week. Super stoked about that. So go me.

Lots of good screamo stuff out there. Saetia, Pg. 99, City of Caterpillar and Hot Cross being some of the forerunners/best in show. Lots of good stuff from Europe that gets into some other genres, too. Celeste treading the blackened territories. June Paik getting into some doomed things. Aussitot Mort is fucking fantastic -- the Nagykanizsa album fucking kills it.

Hell plus with most of my basslines they were pretty much long single note melodies while the guitars repeated.


Celeste is amazing. I love them. there is tons of great screamo, which is why I use the term skramz to separate it from the idiots who use screamo to call everything ever with some slighly yelling vocals.
