What do you need to know?

Mainly the separation of colors. It it ok to screen one color over another or should I leave that part blank to avoid the colors looking weird? I'll be screening black jackets and want all the colors to look as uniform as possible so I'm not sure if orange would look the same on the black jacket as it would over part of a white screen printed image. I don't have a press so my screens aren't gonna line up perfectly every time anyway though.

I find that printing one color over another works fine for paper printing (as long as it's dark over light). Just print the lightest color first and let them dry before printing the next color over it. If you try to print wet on wet the inks in the screens will start to change. Now, I always print on light paper so I'm not 100% sure how it's going to act on a black printing surface. In your specific case I think that the orange ink over the black paper will probably look different than over white ink. There are two ways you can avoid this but neither one is perfect.

1: Make sure the ink colors don't overlap. This will be really hard considering you don't have a printing press. Even with a printing press this can be hard.

2: Print a white base underneath all of the orange sections. This also will be very hard to line up exactly without a press. This will be easier to pull off without a really tight registration. Like, if the design is orange with a white outline then there will be some wiggle room. Or you can make the top orange layer slightly bigger than the base layer to make sure no white peeks out around the sides. This technique is used a lot when printing light colored inks on dark colored shirts.

Thanks for the advise. I've printed white and yellow (different projects) on black before and they both did fine. Havent tried overlapping yet though. The idea for this release is to have the artwork in orange and then the band logo and album title in white. Still messing around with ideas but being this will be the first 12" my band is putting out I wanna make it go all out and make it as fancy as I can while staying within budget. Outsourcing a full color printed jacket is too costly. We're probably going to do no more than 200 copies and everywhere that prints jackets is a 500 minimum. That's too wasteful IMO. Plus the DIY appeal of it all means more to me.

I finally got my girl into TPB. Now we walk around swearing all the damn time, talking about getting drunk and eating chicken fingers, haha.
Also, I think my lab buddies and I are going to do a TPB Halloween group costume, which will (hopefully) be awesome.

Yeah.....still not selling me on Rush.

Anyone who does not like Rush should give 2112 a listen. from wiki-

"In the year 2062, a galaxy-wide war results in the union of all planets under the rule of the Red Star of the Solar Federation. By 2112, the world is controlled by the "Priests of the Temples of Syrinx," who determine the content of all reading matter, songs, pictures — every facet of life.

A man discovers an ancient guitar and learns to play his own music. Thinking he has made a wonderful discovery that will be a boon to humanity, he goes to present the guitar to the priests of the Temples, who angrily destroy it and rebuke him for unearthing one of the "silly whims" that caused the collapse of the previous civilization. He goes into hiding and dreams of a world before the Solar Federation. Upon awakening he becomes distraught and commits suicide. As he dies, another planetary battle begins resulting in the ambiguous ending "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: We have assumed control." (This spoken section was created by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson reportedly "messing around with a tape recorder.") In the "VH1 Classic Albums" series about the album, Neil Peart confirmed that he intended the ending to be a happy one as the people of the Solar Federation are liberated.

On the album, Peart credits "the genius of Ayn Rand." Rand, a Russian-born, Jewish-American novelist and creator of the philosophy of Objectivism, wrote a novella titled Anthem (itself adopted as the title of another Rush song, from the album Fly By Night) from which Peart borrowed the broad strokes of the plot. This caused the band significant negative publicity, labelling the band as right-wing extremist, the British NME even making allusions to Nazism"

Side two is a bunch of weed inspired silly shit like A passage to Bangkok. If you can get past the somewhat jangly sounding guitars, it's some killer music and is what I think of when people mention Rush.

I think that hand printed jackets add to the appeal to a lot of folks. The people who are into the hand printed DIY aesthetic don't mind a few imperfections here and there and in some cases might prefer them, so I wouldn't worry that much about it. I hand printed the sleeves for my old band's 7" and it was a huge pain in the ass but in the end it was worth it.

Hell the few imperfections on those jackets are what attracts me a bit more towards them cause they get more individualistic.

unless like that one Chariot album where they block printed all the covers. they were just sloppy with it. some of them were just complete black ink.
