Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Not to derail the dirt pedal discussion, but howling mine (Bryan from thou's label) is putting out an legit release of of a recording from an old band of mine from 10 years ago. Don't have a lot of details yet, but I'm really stoked for it finally get properly mastered and have a legit release on a cool label. We made 50 or 100 cdr's all those years ago (I don't even have a copy) and somehow it went on to have a life of it's own over the years and has a little bit of a following. I've always been proud of that band and loved those songs and it's pretty awesome to actually have something happen with it, even if it's a decade later. Should probably see a release earlyish next year I think.
The band was called threnos. There's no official internet presence I can link to, but it's out there. All 5 songs have made to YouTube by this point, in case anyone is looking to hear it.

I mentioned to Nick that I may be interested in putting a footswitchable HM-2 circuit into the amp for fun. Would be cool.
You HAVE to do this.

To keep the expense down I think I'll just say set everything to 10 and it'll just be on the footswitch as 'Destroy' or something of that nature and maybe make it blendable. I think it'd be pretty dope. We are too far out to get in to the specs but I just wanted something fairly simple control-wise that works for active bass and guitar that can add a bit of grit and I'll use pedals for everything else. Thinking about 100-150 watts. Don't really know what I want for aesthetics and name but I'm going to day dream about it every day until my name is up.

Parker, so awesome. I wish any of my old projects had something to remember them by, let alone a legacy of music that is still imortant and influential, obscurity be damned!
Thanks AA for making it an easy search for the rest of us
Listening and digging now.
We have a show tonight with Disenchanter. They absolutely slayed the one time I saw them and I'm pretty stoked for it. It was a last minute thing as one of the Portland bands cancelled due to family medical emergency and we got asked to fill in. New line up for flux, lots of changes to the music and it's probably way to soon, but I'm looking forward to it. Tony left some big shoes and our new bassist has stepped into them nicely but I think we've only had 3 practices with him? Fuck it we only had two with our second guitarist before a show. TRIAL BY FIRE! I think I'll just buy a few rounds of shots before we go on and just try to have fun with it.

Mr. s, gonna check out your music while I get my breakfast together.
Conky, get that Monarch, find a nice low to mid gainy setting you like, run your Black Forest into it dialed for chunk, thank me later.
Sometimes I really lament flipping my monarch. I think I offloaded it for the ape blaster though, so I don't regret that.
I have been thinking about picking up another one...

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I started looking for the Threnos stuff before continuing reading the thread. Glad I found the right stuff! That's such a cool thing, be sure to let us know when!
To follow up on the OCD thing, I don't notice any huge issues with the bypass on mine in particular; but then again, I've had a passive volume pedal on my board for 4 years
Additionally, whatever they did to their clone, it has SHITLOADS of gain. I've got mine with gain around 10 o'clock, and I don't think I could need much more. Good to know I have another 2/3 of the dial to use. I find that it gets darker and woolier and fuzzier the more gain I use, and I got a lot of pick attack and punchiness back with it rolled it back. More aggressive, less hair. I like both sounds, and I can push it some more with my Naga Viper clone! As I recall, the OCD is related to the D+/DOD250/Ross Distortion in some ways, so running the tone maxed gets you a reasonably similar sound in that nothing is being filtered out. And I know how much we all love those Kowloon Walled City tones.
Sorry if I'm sounding all salespersony. I don't usually have much to weigh in on in terms of gear, and I REALLY like this pedal.

I've only got one spot open on my board that's open for low gain od. I want something that stacks with my Quantum Mystic. The Ruetz modded Rat works OK, but I want a little more out of it. I could get away with running the Rat as my high gain dirt and stacking the Monarch into it.
Parker, that rules about the release. I'll definitely be keeping an eye for it. Brian is supposed to be sending me a wholesale trade list so I can get some distro stuff. I'll have to see if I can get a few copies.

I'm looking for a distortion with a tight and focused bass response that would be good for palm muting. I've been considering the Zvex BOR and a few different Tonebender clones. I used to have a Barber Trifecta, and the Tonebender setting on that one worked pretty well. Most ODs aren't dirty enough, and most fuzzes are too loose.
Any ideas?
The Elements, my dude. Even if it doesn't do the tones you are looking for, you'll find it extremely useful in some way or another.
van_muddlestein wrote:The Box of Rock is pretty stellar in all seriousness. And we all know your love affair with zvex, so there's my vote.
Unrelated, but I'm picking up an Ampeg v2 on Monday. Just got a dunlop mini fuzz face silicon today. Much riff. So fuzz.
Jelly. So very jelly.
Droneforbreakfast wrote:
get someone to clone a Tonebender MKI for you, that's definitely a fuzz, but it has a tightness that's closer to OD but is still ranchy as fuck if you want it to. i'd also look into a Buzzaround based on the original circuits, but i don't know if that's gonna be bassy enough for you, although with the volume you use it should be enough. i love my Buzzaround man, that circuit is fucking ace.
if you want to keep a distortion instead of substitute it for a fuzz i'd also look at The Elements, i'd love to have one of those.
I'm not much on Tonebenders, but I can't overstate how much I love my Sound Shank (which is a buzzaround, right?). Chugs pretty well and has some bass to it.
