I'm waiting for the TED talks where all the scientific evidence is shown that working too much is bad for health and productivity.

There are a couple that touch on it. Jason Fried's "Why work doesn't happen at work" is one I can think of, but it's more about work environment. There's also Dan Pink's "The puzzle of motivation."

Come to think of it, I think I've seen those..... I still want more. Enough to make changes in everyday life.
Working slightly less equaling more productivity makes me think of something. I was explaining to my friend the difference between training for muscle strength and training for muscle size, and we hit upon an idea. It really seems like everything is the most productive/efficient/ when done in focused, short-medium bursts. Your brain can't keep learning new material past a certain time limit without a break. Muscles get stronger (purely stronger, not necessarily bigger) by doing very heavy weight with low reps and more rest. Work productivity seems to be better if we're not pushed to work longer hours. I don't have a much more concise way to say it right now, so I'll quit rambling.

I think what you're looking for is the Pareto principle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle
"...for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Management consultant Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who observed in 1906 that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population; Pareto developed the principle by observing that 20% of the pea pods in his garden contained 80% of the peas."
"It is a common rule of thumb in business; e.g., "80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients". Mathematically, the 80–20 rule is roughly followed by a power law distribution (also known as a Pareto distribution) for a particular set of parameters, and many natural phenomena have been shown empirically to exhibit such a distribution."
So basically, it is better to study what your magic 20% is - whether that is a type of work, or a client profile, or whatever - and learn how to duplicate it, than it is to spend your time and effort on the other 80%.

Re: The what ever thread...
Ok I'm just putting this out there. I think it's important that someone draw me a picture of "Snickers Blazinski - Manatee Detective" (he's a manatee, not a detective specialising in manatees). I will find the following themes acceptable:
Noir
Cyberpunk
80's Miami Vice
Texas Ranger
The picture should include not only the manatee but also his name and title, anything else you decide to include is up to you. If the picture is complete post it on this page and then pm me and I will subsequently pay you $25aud via paypal as long as it isn't total shit. For serious.

Re: The what ever thread...
so. umm. those are far more enthralling than they should be. I do love how the patterns induce laser sounds, more or less.
Edit: SO now I'm pretty sure that those will be used to induce some kind of Cronenberg-esque hallucinations and/or subconscious brainwashing.
