I had the same thought right after reading Christian's post. Some one else suggested the QM, that'd be good. We all know anything nic builds you will likely rule, I don't think the elements has quite the low end you are looking for. OCD is a bit trebly to my ear, could just be how it acts in my rig as I know a ton of folks swear by it.

Are you using an eq at all? those MXR's are cheap and can really create some flexibility I like to get things as good as I can when I make a change/npd and then turn the eq on and fine tune. Makes a huge difference.

I've never used an EQ pedal.

The only thing about an OCD or variant is that they might not get "dirty" enough for you, but then I think about your rig... You run your Marshalls pretty hot right with a bit of breakup or do you keep em pretty clean? If you run on with a lil bit of breakup or right on the edge the OCD will sound killer, if you run em clean you might find yourself wanting it to be dirtier. Then again you could always put that black eye boost (you still using one of those?) or any boost in front of it and have as much gain as you'll ever want.

I run both Marshalls clean as a whistle. Lower gain preamp tubes and low inputs.

I have the Black Eye after the Muff. I'm not really a fan of boosts in front of dirt. I like them after.

get someone to clone a Tonebender MKI for you, that's definitely a fuzz, but it has a tightness that's closer to OD but is still ranchy as fuck if you want it to. i'd also look into a Buzzaround based on the original circuits, but i don't know if that's gonna be bassy enough for you, although with the volume you use it should be enough. i love my Buzzaround man, that circuit is fucking ace.

if you want to keep a distortion instead of substitute it for a fuzz i'd also look at The Elements, i'd love to have one of those.

Parker, that rules about the release. I'll definitely be keeping an eye for it. Brian is supposed to be sending me a wholesale trade list so I can get some distro stuff. I'll have to see if I can get a few copies.

i'm guessing it'll be a while before it's on his trade list. he's an old buddy and we've been talking about it for a while, but it's just getting serious now, which means we're a good while from a release, as i'm sure you know. it's recorded, but unmastered and artwork is totally up in the air, not to mention all the shit on the label's end as far as timeline. i might even be premature to even talk about it, but it's a ten year old recording, so i'm not too worried about it.

Go borrow one. Be prepared with some free time to dial it in. Like minimum 3 hours cause you'll likely find a bunch of different settings that kick ass for different things. I did anyways.
I've got one the mxr's, not the greatest probably but it's decent. I set the gain as low as i can and the volume up as high as I can with out generating extra noise. slight dip in the upper mids, boost in low mids and slight boost in the next to lowest low end, and it just makes everything better. I'm considering getting another just to use as a boost, or putting them into the 5 channel looper. super versatile and also killer tool for recording. I can pretty much dial in any of my amps to sound like any of the others using it. Ok, maybe thats a bit of a stretch, but close.

On that note. Is there a drastically better eq out there without getting into rack mount shit?

the MXR 10 band is great. nothing wrong with it. don't know anything that would top it for guitar within the price range and in pedal format.

if you want another one check out the Caline eq's, which sound fine and are a clone of the MXR 10 band eq's. i'm partial to those and the old Boss EQ's, i've had my GE-7b for a long time and always sounds great, no noise whatsoever and it is obviously indestructible. also love the Dano Fish & Chips and they go for the price of a can of Coke, and they're fine pedals. you could also get into a different mindset and get a parametric eq, which is a different animal.

i'm thinking of getting one of those Calines too, later on.

i love eq pedals but i always go waaaay to apeshit. im not a "subtle tweek to 350 hz" kinda guy . im a DIME ZERO OR LEAVE AT NOON. kinda guy

they're best used with subtlety, although heavy freq boosting can produce interesting results if you want to dominate a certain frequency or get a cocked wah tone or something like that.

most people, imagine... if they have too much bass they will boost treble, but that's counter productive. the secret is to cut what you don't want out of the sound instead of boosting everything to try to cancel out what you don't want. there's a lot to be said about graphic EQ'ing.
