I was just listening to Rise and Fall over the weekend, fuck those guys were good....

you're dropping the classic hits here. asschapel was awesome. dallas is an old homie of mine too. i grew up in nashville and knew him many many years ago and saw asschapel a bunch at the front end of their reign. i've hung out with dallas once or twice in chicago in my travels in recent years. excellent dude. and damad was the shit. i saw them a ton of times and got to know them a bit in the old days. good folks there as well, but i'm sure i don't need to tell you.

may as well mention anti schism and initial state while we're at it as awesome bands. i mean, they didn't have synths, but they rule and scott drummed for both bands and also for damad. i don't really recall synths with damad, now that i'm thinking of it. they certainly didn't have them live. maybe on record. i still have that LP, but haven't listened to it in a while. should definitely give it another spin.

Woke up to lots of good news today. Our 6x12s are shipping today and we are a part of a podcast with a bunch of bands from all over. Only 3 songs in but it fucking rips so far.

I definitely dig all of the classic crust stuff and it's a huge influence on this project. Thanks a ton for the suggestions guys.

Anyone have ideas for writing synthesizers into fast and heavy music? My roommate and I are starting a new project that's like atmospheric blackened hardcore? Influences being predominantly Young and In The Way, Wolves In The Throne Room, Full Of Hell, Genghis Tron, His Hero Is Gone, etc... Currently the line up is me on guitar with an octave pedal/bass vi when I have the cash to get one, a drummer, and my roommate on vocals. We want to add a synth/keys player as opposed to another stringed instrument, but I don't know how to write parts for that. I'm currently doing an approximation with an Ipad, some apps and my pedalboard.

first of all... go analog or GTFO.

also......... you know, i usually love super fatness in synths, but in your specific situation you might want to get something that sounds cutting and clear... on a budget you could look at the Mini/Microbrute.

the key is really experimenting and find out what works, there's probably a lot to be done in that deparment 'cause it's not something you hear all the time, but i think it's worth it.


what kind of gear, synth-wise are you using right now?

Currently a Moog filtatron app and a prophet app, along with my pedalboard as this was a solo project until he expressed interest in joining and I'm really broke. The mini/microbrute are right up my alley, I was also looking at microkorgs. For noisier stuff, I have an EHX random tone generator hopefully being delivered soon and I want to get some other sort of noisemaker/drone synth. My roommate has a bunch of soft synths, but I'm not sure what they are.

The Asschapel stuff wasn't quite what I expected but I think I like it.

I was thinking when I read this earlier today but didn't have time to respond that it might be worth it listening to the new Inter Arma EP (The Cavern). Lots of synthy-pads in there that add a layer. I feel like in Genghis Tron, especially when I saw them live during Board up the House era there were dual keyboards (singer and keyboardist) playing things and there were lots of pads here and there.

Depending on what you're going for it might be worth it some sampling of different pads with lead like stuff over the top. Or doing a lot of leads on guitar and doing bass lines and fat pads on the synth end. Lots of room to explore.

Sweet solo bass leads over your rhythm with pads to thicken it up? I think about doing this all the time but I don't want to add a keyboardist to the band most days and it feels like a pain in the ass to try to sample a bunch of shit without complicating things.

A huge part o the Genghis Tron sound was definitely the two keyboardists and the programmed drums, pads are definitely something I've been working on implementing, especially into noise parts. I think the approach we're going for is going to be me handling samples, a noise synth, and Joey and the eventual keyboard player will both play keys/synth.

Hey Timmah Grimmah:

There is a band called "The Sleer" that posted on the "post your band" thread. Personally I'm not a fan of screamo, soon as I hear a droning growl I'm done, but "The Sleer" is SO FREAKIN' BEAUTIFULLY MELODIC that it literally stopped my hands from closing the bandcamp window. Very heavy with such a gorgeous melodic presence, it left me stunned. It's not often that ANYTHING metal can be described as "exquisitely beautiful", but they certainly can.

Microkorg is cool, but not really analog, don't forget. however, if you can get a used Korg MS-20 Mini, or pay it on instalments, please do yourself a favor and get one. EVERY musician who is alive today should get one of them, they're a steal, they are so good i want to shit my pants everytime i plug it in. IT FUCKING RULES. look into it. Automaticgainsay's demos on YT are brilliant.

and you can do so much with them it's not even funny. if you were playing one of them for a few years straight you probably wouldn't exaust the options on it. complex semi-modular patch bay for the fucking win.

this is not only for you. everyone in here interested in synths owes himself to at least try one.



if you're not willing to spend that much, a Microbrute is an AMAZING option. that stuff has more power than you realize at first glance and the sound engine sounds brilliant and unique, it's definitely not a toy. has a step sequencer, a unique distortion circuit, and a cute patch bay too, that synth is really well packed in terms of features and for it's size. for 200 bucks it's a no brainer, i will definitely getting one in the future, but i'm pretty set on getting a Theremin Plus next, unless i do something crazy along the way, which is not unlikely.

hey dudes, any opinions on the Carvin X100B? been planning on a second head for a bit and have an opportunity to snag one for $350(might be able to talk him down some more + he can work with me on payments, huge plus). I don't really plan on using the lead channel, so I'm wondering if this thing can get real loud without breaking up too quickly. it'll be running stereo vs a VK100 so it doesn't have much to compete against hehe. or would waiting out for something like an AOR 100 be a better route? thank you senseis
