just for the record, i wasn't saying a 100 watt marshall isn't loud. i play through one and it's loud as fuck and i love it. i also like the way it sounds more than almost anything else, including a model t. i was just saying on the question of pure volume, i think the t would be louder. for my money though, i'd go marshall.

I'm slightly set on those because I've had every other cheap alternative to a loud 100w: Sovtek, traynor, ampeg, fender, sound city, early sunn, Univox, etc. Even a JMP. And out of all those I kept my Sound City 100, which has been the loudest and best sounding of the bunch. The Univox and V4 were right up there, and looking back I should have kept them. But oh well. Anyways, I've always wanted an early marshall or model T, so I figured I'd try for one of those next. But I'm asking because at this rate it seems I might be able to find an early super bass for cheaper than a model T, and people say those are "loud" but are they as loud as a Model T? That's where I get stuck.

A local guitar shop has a '70 Super Bass, I believe, but I've never plugged into it...

I hear you're kinda set on those but if you ever see a Bassman 135, if you haven't yet, give it a shot. You might be surprised. Also, have you thought about an Orange AD140? They're great sounding heads, loud as hell and I've been seeing a lot of them for a grand or below which I think is a fair price for them.

Yeah, I played a 100w JMP for a while, a '79, and it was loud but I never felt it had enough balls behind it. It was also previously modded for high gain and a bunch of shit, so who knows, we got rid of it.

The one I had was the only one in their line built in the US and handwired. It was the UX1501 model and I'm a straight fool for selling it. I was playing bass at the time and wanted a 300w amp (svt) but never realized how perfect the Univox was on guitar. It was 140w with huge trannies and 6550's. I'll never run into another one, so I suck, but oh well. I don't know about any of their other models though.

Thanks man, I'll look into them. I've had a handful of fenders and didn't care for them too much. I'll research the 135 when I get a chance. An AD140 could be nice but if I'm gonna go Orange I rather save up to buy either a vintage OR120 or just get a brand new OR100 directly from their rep. They hooked up our bass player with cabs at like 50% off or something, I assume it extends to the guitarist (me) too.

chillerthanmost wrote:Quick question, for those with first hand experience, which of the following two amps is louder: 1st gen Model T or early 70's Super Bass? I ask because my Traynor (YBA-3) isn't keeping up with my Sound City 100... So I'm looking for something new in the "100w +" range. Model T and an early Marshall are just about the only two type of amps I've never owned, so they are at the top of my list.

Just to chime in, I had an '84 2204 and it was incredibly fucking loud even at 50 watts, and with a shitty inefficient cab I should say too

Maybe consider something else entirely like a Science Mother. More expensive, of course, but probably more reliable.

Ad140 was the only amp I ever owned that was so loud it made my ears hurt.
