Sucks man, I've had dreams like that before, usually they are in third person though and I am inhabiting a "character". Usually pretty fucked but not visceral because I'm dissociated in some way from the violence.
Used to have a recurring dream when I was a kid that wolf smashed through my window and ripped my throat out and then I would get this super intense vertigo feeling like I was falling in pitch darkness and then I would suddenly wake up. Apparently kids tend to dream about stuff like dangerous animals and the like when they are young as a sort of mental training/warning for the real thing but later in life transition to dreams that are more adult/culture appropriate like losing your keys, forgetting about an exam or suddenly realising you went to school naked. Also found out recently that night terrors and nightmares are totally distinct phenomenon (for those suffering forgive my ignorance). Night terrors occur in stage 4 deep sleep whereas nightmares are pretty much just bad dreams that happen in normal REM. Pretty cool stuff (science wise).
