Just a headsup. Got a demon w/ gate and blend in the classifieds. It's the first one I've seen with the blend. Love this pedal. (Kinda serendipitous that I came in on OCD talk.)

I put an sm57 and an i5 on each of the bottom Reapers on the edge of the dust cap and cone to see what sounded best. Figured I'd use one and then do the same thing with the condensers and then record those two. So far it sounds better. Really nice and thick. I think the cab just needed room to breathe. Once I take the kid to school I'm gonna start recording again. I'll try to post clips.
Not trying to repeat what has already been said but you are dealing with a couple of problems here. As skip has already said the sound you are recording is not the sound you are hearing in the room. You would have to stick your head right up against the grill to get an idea of what the mic is hearing. Guitars are recorded like this to eliminate the room tone and/or bleed from other instruments if recording others at the same time. By eliminating the room sound you are getting a more "clean" or "direct" sound that is much more present and upfront in comparison to distant mics. This is because as you pull the mics back it is able to pick up more of the sound that is bouncing around the room thus introducing reverb and phasing/filtering as the sound waves cancel or boost one another. It really helps to study the room you record in to figure out how audio is affected and learn that this corner boosts bass for example.
By recording in a closet you may be effecting the sound a bit more as the walls are so close that, even though you have the mics right up on the grill, you might be getting certain frequencies boosted or cut since the closet is acting pretty similar to an iso box. An iso box is nice as it allows you to muffle the sound in a small space but it also effects how the speakers sound, especially in comparison when used in a more open room. And you are only making it worse by using the 6x12 as you are now having even more speakers throw out even more waves that can cut and boost. This leads into the physics problems of building cabinets with multiple speakers and phase cancelation. But having all those speakers in such a small space is probably one of the problems you are having when trying to record. So good to hear that flipping the cab has helped a bit. You might just want to suck it up and drag the cab out of the closet when no one is home and see if recording outside of the closet helps the sound any.
Or, not to suggest heresy, use a smaller amp/cab. You can still get a big sound from smaller stuff. It is what a lot of guitarist do when they head into the studio as it can be pretty hard to get a good recorded sound off big gear without blowing shit up or dealing with stuff like I described above.
Mic choice is a whole other topic that can lead down a crazy spending spree. I personally never really liked the sm57 all that much. But it is cheap and a good work horse. If you are looking for something different check out some ribbon mics like the royer 101 or 121. They are way more expensive then a sm57 but they also work really well with it or by themselves. Ribbons tend to have a more rounded and warm sound.
I'm planning on my next gear purchase to pick up a decent ribbon mic. I flipped the cab around so the cab could have about 6 feet of space before the other wall. I had planned on putting the condensers on that wall, one pointing right in the middle of the cab and the other up high, out of the direct line of the speakers. Before I could do that I started playing around with the eq on the track with the SM 57 and shaved off a little high end and boosted a tad bit around 500hz and blended them together. Sounded realllllly close to the tone of my amp in the practice space so I just went with that. Gonna do the other guitars either this weekend or next week and will record them in the other bedroom with the condenser on it. We'll see how that does.

If you wanted to go the OCD route, Joyo makes a clone for cheap.

Fuck me. I really need one of those. I could see it booting my Pharaoh off the board, at least for a while. I've really been digging my Pharaoh with a boost out front for the chugs. Seems like the QM could cop that on its own...
So hear me out and offer guidance doombros. I have a custom Whetstone and custom Twosome. I never really use the Fix'd and absolutely don't use the Whetstone up to it's potential. I like them because the feels and custom snazz. Should I flip them and 'downgrade' to a Sibling (or Grand Orbiter) and Musket (or some other gnarly muff) and put the additional proceeds into the gear fund, or hang on to them???

Seconded. I really like mine, but occasionally I get some odd notched/nasally mids on mine. VERY loud pedal, and sounds better slightly dirty IMO.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Van M: don't bother with an LPB. I had one, they're ok for the money, but I'd say spend a bit more and get something that could be more versatile if need be.
And T: I'm with Timm, don't go ape for extra features you aren't gonna use. I'd say go the orbiter over the sibling, but that's personal preference. Don't forget wildebelor has a bad stone that sounds pretty tasty to (I'd link to it but I'm on my phone and that's a headache).
Personally I'm tossing up whether or not to ditch my Trinity in favour of an Afterneath. I only use it for the church and ethereal settings, which I love the shit out of, but I could not give a fuck about verbs that don't sound like someone stuck a black hole in a cave.
I should probably allocate some funds to picking up a noise gate at some point as well....but that's like boring...and necessary.

Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
Trey, I flipped a Musket for the SS Twosome because rare and I wanted to check out the Fix'd. I had a similar reaction to the FF (it's awesome, just not for me) and eventually sold the Twosome (to fund another Muff, incidentally). I have a couple pedals I keep primarily for the looks ("Off the Air" Reverberator, for instance, which in addition to being a great reverb also gets bonus points because I work in TV) but pretty much everything else I have because it does a thing I need done as well as possible.
So, you know... anecdotes...

I don't really want something as colorful as the OCD. Basically have my Ampeg v2 cranked and want that sound but "more". I've had several LPB-1's and I've enjoyed them. Was just seeing what other suggestions people might have. Has to be cheap because I'm completely broke(children and christmas....) and I had been unemployed for a few weeks. GOT A JOB TODAY AT AN AMP REPAIR SHOP! WAHOOOOOOOO!!!
Also, dude....get a musket and a grand orbiter(the grand orbiter fucking owns) and then put the extra cash towards something else fun.

Congrats dude!
Have you considered that DOD Bifet thing? That has some balls, I hear.
Or, skully has one of those Ibanez Bottom Boosters, he digs it, I think he uses it as a clean low end thing, too.

You could try the pigtronix class a boost. I use one after all my other dirt to just make things loud. It doesn't really add any color, just volume. It pushes an amp nicely too especially if you run it at 18v. One knob, keep it low for a nice boost, turn it up for some extra shit.

Gonna go way against the grain here, I didn't get on with the ocd as a boost at all. Just made everything bad treble city. I'm using a clean louder set "The elements" with a Naga viper for boost, so it's not hatred of treble, just the treble I was getting from the ocd.
Cheap pretty killer option for boost, ya'll are gonna goof on me for this but the soul food can be had for like 40 bucks and works really well if you want more loud with some added clarity.

Sitting around playing my guitar and all I can think is, is it time for Whores to be here yet? No? Well, fuck. Soon enough though. Soon enough. I am pretty excited to catch Eyehategod with Bloodmoon opening. Been a while since I got to hang with Peter and catch a good show but come January 25th both those things gonna happen, I'm talking getting two birds stoned at once or whatever.

Yusssss, loves me some of that there Sonic Cloth Brotherhood goodness.
