on the Orange front you should check out the TH100...bigger brother of the TH30...but the newer ones have El34 tubes. I tried the TH30 a while ago, and was impressed by it. It gets dumped into the modern metal category, but to be honest with some fine refinement of the tone knob i could get some really nice doom tones. Also the clean was amazing on it. The one thing that bothered me about it was the fact that it didnt have balls...but the TH100 has EL34's and is 100w...so that should have balls and with the clean channel so nice it will take pedals pretty well.

I played out of a Fender Quad Reverb last night with my Coven. I didn't fuck around with settings all that much. It belongs to a buddy of mine. I could really get into the tone of it clean but didn't have time to really dial it with my dirt. It did get really farty and buzzy at times but I think it would really benefit from a speaker swap. My buddy bought it, recently retubed, for $600 so it's not like it was a bad deal -- it sounds good, probably great for some of the loud post hardcore type shit he is doing. Did not work as well with the "heavy music for gear nerds and dungeons and dragons enthusiasts" that I've been writing.

That being said... found out I'll probably be getting a bonus coming up here so I think I'm looking for a head to compliment my RedBear MK60. I'm not sure really where I want to be with that though. Definitely need something loud, clean, and pedal friendly. I feel like I'm going to be buying a lot of amps and returning them just in order to try them out.

At my disposal to try I have a 5150, an Orange Rockerverb 50 and a Marshall JCM 2000 Dual Super Lead (50w). Not really sure that any of those are gonna do it for me but who knows. Anything I should be on the lookout for? New or old.

If aiming to pair with the redbear I'd say either the peavey or orange but both of those do have a fair amount more watts. If you willing to go outside of those three I'd say a Peavey VTM60 or Sovtek Mig50. Both of those are similar yet different enough to pair well with the redbear.

Look into an 80s Butcher. Super clean through the low input and takes pedals really well. 5150s and modern Oranges are more picky on pedals in my experience.

Agreed... that's what followed my Musket>Twosome because I was curious how they stacked up against each other. The Hoof just seemed to have a bit more of that Muffy special sauce. I sold it (along with a grip of other kit) in a fit of "I'm not playing blah blah blah" but that might be one I check out again. Or possibly the Cloven Hoof.

Great minds think alike. I don't care for that shape as much as I once did, but it's still a pretty cool shape. Their more "classic/vintage" shapes seem really cool, but they seem like they could pursue more of those. Those'd be the only Schecter's I'd buy.

Can't help it if their visage and appeal is essentially Hot Topic/Spencers.

Yeah the Tempest is a pretty sweet body shape. I don't need anymore strat-alikes, I just really like the aesthetics of this one. If I could get it in baritone scale with a les paul body, I'd cream my jeans.

Modern Oranges with the exception of the OR50 are EXTREMELY picky about pedals, dirt pedals, especially. That's the main reason I unloaded my Orange. I love love love the tone but there's no options if you want variation due to their fickle nature with pedals. Traded for an Ampeg v2 and I don't see myself looking back unless I'm looking at a vintage Orange like an OR80 or OR120.

My Sorado has made my pedals sound better than ever. Sunn stuff seems to be almost always a bit overpriced it seems but I have not played anything this clean that still gets so convincingly brutal with pedals. I just got mine for around $300 so there are still good deals to be found on Sunn gear, just not on eBay or Reverb.

I have a Schecter Tempest and I love it. Every other guitar by them that I've tried plays great.

It's unfortunate that 90% of the stuff they make looks like something from an Affliction t-shirt.

Relatively sad news: My mancave died today. It died a clean an honorable death. And alas, as it was foretold, it would rise from the dead to be reborn in the guest room as the man corner. I have no idea why my wife painted this room orange, but after spending a bit of time in here getting my rig and computer set up, I kinda dig it.

I am not trying to be a jerk here but this tale makes me feel very glad to be single and completely self centered.

Insofar as being able to recreate stuff live, that's a whole other philosophical divide in which both sides have totally valid perspectives. I think that it all depends on one's own personal vision for a song, album, or even a band.

I would never poo-poo a band for doing something that they're probably not going to be able to recreated in a live setting. To me, it's really just using the studio as an instrument and not necessarily a crutch. I mean, if everyone was a "purist" and did not geek out in the studio, there'd be no such thing as The White Album, Jimi's backwards leads, or any ridiculous number of great and extremely valid musical explorations.

Finally got my ape blaster back. So strange to hear that thing through a darker/warmer sounding amp. Still rad, though. Brings the thickness.

It was strange switching from the Bassman 135 to the SLO with that thing. The SLO clean channel is just a plexi so it's darker/warmer than the 135 by quite a bit. I'm glad your AOR is cranking finally!

I hadn't but now that I have I feel like I want to rant. Bad hardware placement. I don't see why so many guys feel a need to put parts that can be damaged by stress right next to the only fucking part of the pedal that gets stressed. Say dude is heavy (I am talking actual weight here people), has only one pedal and all he has to hook it up with are cables with straight plugs. One wrong step and shit is getting busted. Same with these dudes that position pots so that the knob is one inch from the footswitch. You're just asking for returns. I mean are these stompboxes or gingerly press the button with your pinky toe boxes? Am I the asshole? What gives?

Basically have my Ampeg v2 cranked and want that sound but "more".

If you haven't already you need to get an SHO in the mix. There is just nothing else like it. The perfect 'more' pedal.

Somewhat related: I have been using this simple formula to get interesting results every time. Naga Viper > any dirt pedal or two > SHO. Usually the NV is on full treble and then I adjust dirt and SHO to taste. And it does taste good.

I second the SHO suggestion. I had one and loved it with my VT-40's. The only problem I found was that I really liked how it sounded as a clean boost as well as when it was cranked, it was an always on pedal but I couldn't decide where to keep it. Solved hat problem by getting a Super Duper 2n1 clone which is just two SHO's stacked together with a master volume.

Anyone try the GilaMondo? That's the phaser I'm interested in.

I'm not much of a phaser person so this'll be a shitty review but I have one and I think it's great. It can get so deep and slow and the 'bonus' knob is really cool. Bam, that's all I can even say lest I meander into bullshitting.

So if the Orbiter can do that, I'm pretty sold.

I have to imagine the Gila Mondo could do that.

I will now show you my new guitar. I have been searching for the right one for about three years now and this is it. The frets are practically untouched. I pulled out the SD Blackouts which sounded so crappy you wouldn't even believe it and put in the only pickups I had laying around. Fortunately those were a Wolfetone Marshallhead II (which I got in some trade way back and then forgot about but then tried to sell on CL but forgot about again after it didn't sell in ten tries) for the neck and a '79 (allegedly) Super Distortion (from the Fuzz Face guitar) for the bridge. It is now the best guitar I have. I have never owned a more sustainy, resonant axe. It just feels so zippy and tight. Plus the dumbness of look is sure to bother the Musical Intelligentsia around here, so extra bonus!
