Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I bought Sumac's album Wednesday and Torche's new album Thursday. Been listening to both of them to see what I think. The Sumac album is pretty straight forward, almost blunt. Not much screwing around or anything. I think 'The Deal' might be my favorite track of the bunch. The new Torche album is good. I don't think that they lost their recent poppy stuff with getting heavier again. The songs are just as catchy. Those bonus tracks are sweet too

And I fucking love that Van Zandt Vol 2 album. Gotta look into vol 1.
Did you pick up their 2012 album? It's so raw it's basically grunge. They definitely went away from their folk sound a lot more with that one. It was kickin' to see live. The buzz was awesome and their tone was gnarly as fuck. They were touring Europe again a few weeks ago, but the album wasn't out yet and I didn't know any of the new songs. Seeing as I didn't have a lot of money, I had just come back from a gig in Dublin and I have seen them before, I passed.

i did Sumac today too...its ok...a couple good songs...not 100% with it yet.
But thats a good thing, anytime i like something after the first listen it means that its going to get boring very quickly. It always takes me a while to love an album.
Totally agree on the " It always takes me a while to love an album."
Almost all of my favorite albums took atleast a few listens to tofully comprehend their full awesomeness and truly love. Many of them, I actually wrote off initially and had to revisit to get it. I'm a self acknowledged tough critic and I consume music pretty slowly. I try to be more open, but my ear only likes what it likes.( and thats not necessarily genre based.)

The new leviathan is top of my list right now.

I'd say there are some records that I 'get' later, and some of those are some of my favorite records. Some, though, just click immediately.

Can't say that I'm a fan of the hipsters appropriating this sort of music, but whatever, maybe it means they will leave stoner/doom alone.
I really dig Dead Soldiers, which have some hcfx and/or doom room connection - a common member from Galixicon, if memory serves correctly. Anyhow, they are rad and you should listen to them.

I had listened to it streaming awhile ago. I liked it all. it reminded me of OMG more than anything. Never been a big fan of Isis... hell the only thing I really listen to from them is Mosquito Control.
I've never been one of those that it has to grow on me. Usually if I like something from the start I always like it, if I don't like it I will never like it. If I'm on the fence about it, usually it ends up in the no care or no like.
It's not like anything really thrills or floors me. Ever since Gorguts: Obscura when it came out nothing has melted my mind in that way. So I guess that's kinda sad since it's been like that since 98. So only things are... that's good or great but never jaw dropping.
Torche... kinda liked the first album but not by much. band on a whole falls in no care to no like. Floor pretty much the same. I never found them so amazing, I felt they could've done more or just been better though Simitar was a great song.

Last couple of days I've been jamming the new bangers from:
Elder
Sumac
Leviathan
Heiress
Crypt Sermon
WRONG
Enjoying them all quite heavily. Really fucking love the Crypt Sermon album for that classic doom vocal with sick ass riffage.

Holy fucking shit, people still have 401ks????
I will be headed to Houston on Tuesday for a week for my sister-in-law's wedding. Not entirely sold on the idea of having to go to Texas, but glad to get away for a bit. We will be in the League City/Galveston area - any suggestions for shit to do? We are taking the kiddo to the zoo, but have literally no other non-wedding plans besides that.

Houston............... uh, sure there's something good there, maybe? Played there a couple times- not good but that was a long time ago.
The Akai Headrush has fucked with me a bit but I'm getting the hang of it- not sure it'll make the live board, cuz it's fucking huge but I might have space for it if we end up getting along.

I don't know that I'm really in Lord Mantis. I'm playing bass on this recording and then we'll see what happens. I'm not really keen on the idea of joining an existing band again.

I've got Inter Arma the cavern sitting next to my record player but I went down to the basement to riff out instead.
Anyone know the guy MEC who is selling an Ampeg head in the BST right now?

Not that I'm anyone special, but bought from and sold to him a few times over the years. Solid dude.
