That is precisely what I dislike about Rush (and, as a whole, that end of the 'prog' spectrum): the 'compositional' aspect of it. It's the same reason I don't dig a lot of the hyper-technical metalbands, even though sonically they're very much in my wheelhouse.

Endless noodles all day erry day.

So I'm scheduled to be in Portland, OR for most of next week (Tue night through Sun morning) for a conference. Any suggestions on things I should do, shows I should see, or dark beers I should drink?

Finally get to share this: My secret project for the last few months. Gibson Faded V. I fully refinished it and installed all new everything (hardware, wiring, nut, and Lace Brent Hinds Hammerclaws). First full refinish/rebuild project. Really happy with how it came out.

Also got to hang out with this dude for a bit the other night. Such a great dude, and YOB destroyed (as expected).

Need more pics of that V. I intermittently crave a Flying V, more so than most guitars, even though I don't play standing up very much.

Video reminds me of that commercial where no one can successfully use a q-tip. "Ow!"

I play like that sometimes with my Strat, but I also like to play normally. I will own a V one day.

the rhoads style jacksons are incredibly comfy to sit with. the shorter lower side of the V makes it pretty perfect. Neckdive city but cool guitars.

ML's get a lot of flack because of the Dimebag association, but really they are the perfect thing for seated playing, you can do the v thing and have them at just the right angle, or play it like you would a strat or lp/sg/whatever.

misterstomach wrote:Yeah, the 300 relevant pages I'm referring to are definitely all in book 5. 4 was totally worthless. 5 started off worthless, but did eventually get good. But as you said, all leading to nowhere. There's no way that obese old fuck is going to live long enough to finish it. He's about three more cheeseburgers away from a coronary as it is.

Spoiler alert! I don't know how to do the hidden thing on my phone, but if you haven't read all the books, don't read my next paragraph if you care.
NSFW: show
And I'm just so sick of the fake cliff hanger deaths and shit. Tyrion is killed in battle! Then a couple of chapters later he's alive. Brianne, or whatever her name is gets hung! Everything goes black! Then after a few chapters or in the next book she's actually alive. Arya gets blinded! Never mind, she gets her sight back. Catlynn is so unjustly murdered! Wait! She is still unjustly murdered but now she's a hateful zombie witch. I can't even remember how many times he's beat that cheap trick into the ground. And possibly the only thing he does that's more irritating, is actually unceremoniously killing off characters that he's spent all his literary clout making you care for. So at the end of book 5 I was just exasperated. I don't care which category this one falls into, I'm fucking sick of both. Either way is a manipulative way to get me to read the next one. You know what you could really do to keep me interested? Start bringing it fucking home. Make it seem like all this is going somewhere. Cause right now I don't think he could wrap it up in 20 books, which he apparently isn't going to write anyway. How many years has it been since the last one? Ugh. So annoying. I honestly just think he bit off more than he could chew. I think he, and everyone else, thought he was a better writer than he actually is. Those first three books were awesome, but now he's lost in the woods with no clue how to get out and too much ego to get the editing he needs. I think what really happened here is that he took on Tolkien and ended up face down on the mat. Now he'll just cash his check and let the tv writers clean up his mess.

Anyway, I was in a small town in southern Baja in a tent on the beach for 6 nights and in stupid cabo for one night. It was awesome. So much amazing Mexican food. And good times in or near the ocean. Plus one good desert hike.

Yeah man, I have my doubts about him finishing it up, but at least the dudes who run the show know the basic series of events all the way through the end of the series.

Here be spoliers:
NSFW: show
The bait and switch death thing is always annoying, but even more in this series since he does kill people left and right, which makes the fake death thing seem more manipulative than it is in other series. I hate seeing or reading an implied death and groaning because I know they aren't fucking dead since you don't see it happen. The death at the end of book five was very rad and reasonably unexpected though.

I do agree that he's lost and meandering around realizing that he isn't Tolkien, but there are glimmers that he has the third act set...I just hope he actually writes it instead of wasting thousands of pages yammering on about food and banners and having people walk through the goddamn woods.

That Mexico trip sounds rad. I did the shitty Cancun thing when I was a teenager, but had the foresight to go to Tulum and Chichen Itza while I was there. My wife and I really want to go to Baja the next time we can afford to take a big vacation.

I never play sitting down. I honestly don't know how, nor really care to get comfortable doing so
. I've always played standing up with bass and guitar.
