Ok dudes, So the other night I saw Sleep in Atlanta and I did enjoy their set (or what I saw, we left right when they kicked into Dragonaut). I enjoyed their set and even bought the Clarity single but when I listen t home I just can't get into it. What is their best stuff that I should start with? I've been at home sick all day and tried watching a bunch of their shows on youtube and I couldn't get 10 minutes into it before I had to find something else to listen to. Help me out so's I can keep my doom cred.

Get Sleep's Holy Mountain. It's the one that has Dragonaut on it. You're basically trying to get into Isis by starting with the Melvins split, as it were.

Caveat: The production makes it difficult to get into at first.
Once you get used to it though, it's pretty killer.
I found it took some time for my ears to adjust to the mix and eq when I first heard it all those years ago.

I listened to it today along with parts of Dopesmoker and I don't llike either one. The one that really sucked was Volume One. God that shit is awful. I wanna like them. Everything about them seems cool, but I can't explain what it is that makes me not feel anything from their music other than the urge to put someone else's album on instead.

Edit: I really don't like Dragonaut and that might be part of why I don't like that album. I'm weird in that If the first song on an album sucks then I usually won't listen to it. I mean, I could skip it, but who wants to do that? You know how much energy it takes to hit the button? Not a lot, but I'm lazy so there's that.

Just installed two more 55hz reapers to replace the busted ET65 in my 6x12. Holy shit. Sounds way better with all the same speakers. Just playing at low volumes to break them in already makes my Soldano sound a lot better and more tame in the top end. The ET65 that was making funny noise ended up being that part of the dust cap had separated from the cone. Is there anything I can put on it to fix it? I heard nail polish works but I've never tried it. If I can get it to work I'll probably end up with an empty 2x12 from Atlas or something to have a small home recording cab.

What about figuring for rigs with multiple heads? What if they not set at the same volume? Do we need to create a mean value for amp volume based on all the heads? Are we allowed to add the amp wattages together, or do we have to adjust for the amount of speakers they're driving as well?

Wherein doom factor is calculated as a percentage of the compound effect tritones have on riffing, in conjunction with elements of harsh noise, low tunings and perceived misesry of listener.

So, maybe: %Doom = (TTxR)+(H+L)/Misery

So now we are starting to talk totality of the listening experience. I think the initial formula is still valid and should be expounded upon. So now we have f(z) z+(X/10) x Y. %Doom= ((TTxR)+(H+L)/M)z

So f (d) where d=douche factor as an percentage of 1 with zero indicating the greatest dearth of redeeming qualities. heart + ears ≈ talent(t)expressed as a percentage of 1 with a value of zero indicating a total dearth of talent %Doom= ((TTxR)+(H+L)/M)zdt

Note that now it is possible to fulfill all other doom criteria but if a zero value is entered for douche factor or talent factor there will be zero doom.

Okay so I think I have finally figured out the formula to determine whether or not your amp is doom acceptable.

*Disclaimer* This formula is designed for tube amps.

Legend:
X= Amp wattage
Y= Amp Volume
Z= Amp acceptability

Formula:
(X/10) x Y = Z

Samples:
100w on 8
(100/10) x 10 = 80%

30w on 4
(30/10) x 4 = 12%

50w on 6
(50/10) x 6 = 30%

200w on 10
(200/10) x 10 = 200%

It seems to work out, don't ya think?

As previously brought up, this does not account for the radness of multi amp rigs, I believe I have a solution.

If (X/10) x Y = Z a dual amp rig should be equal to Z/2+Z Triphonic 2(Z/3)+Z Quad 3(Z/4)+Z and so on. We'll call this awesome and express as A

I like Asbestosdeth way more than I do Sleep. I've had the 7" for years and listen to it all the time. I know I don't have to like Sleep. I was being facetious when I said that crap about keeping my doom cred. I'm just trying to keep an open mind while going back to listen to some things that I have brushed off before to see if I may like it this time around but I'm still not feeling them though.
