I'm trying to get into 80/90s japanese punk, so far all I know is GISM. Suggestions?

Oh geez...

The Stalin - kind of a beginning (stay away from star club though)
GISM - Zouo, S.H.I. are all kinda in that realm...oh, The Comes!
Systematic Death -
Gai (kinda turned into Swankys) - Good noisy stuff that ended in very rocknroll stuff
Confuse - Beginnings of Crasher crust (tranquilizer is along these lines too)
Gauze - the big one, tons of bands are kind of in their realm (NK6, Dudman, A.I., etc) (started as Typhus)
There are a bunch of good ones, but some more big ones are Lip Cream, Outo, Rose Rose, Kuro, Asbestos, GAS, Gudon, Crow, LSD, Assfort, Bastard, Death Side, Fuck Geez, Forward, etc.

Gotta mention Disclose though. Disclose!

Stuff that is a little off kilter are like Junk Schizo, Off Mask 00, Laughin Nose, Freedom, Idora (i think that's their name), Gasatou. If you like Oi check out Cobra. Like poppy? Check out Shonen Knife.

The grind/thrashy stuff is there too like Unholy Grave, Final Exit, SOB, stuff on 625 thrashcore like Mind of Asian.

Stuff that is still going is like Gauze, Life, Forward, Warhead, well a ton of 'em.

There is way to much good stuff honestly. It's really hard to single out bands. Lots of great one off flexis and stuff like Jyudin Sochi, Friction, Bitousha, Poisonous Cross Gibbet.

Whatcha into? Might as well throw Melt Banana and Guitar Wolf out there too ('cause they are awesome) (EX-Girl might be worth checking out if you like people dressed as lotuses and singing about being frog people aliens).

HG Fact is a good label to check out too. Check out Mad Blasts of Chaos blog too.

Should be able to find info on most of these. Gotta search man. Tons of really good gems.

i'm obsessed with goth and post-punk from that period rather than straight up hardcore/punk but i'll add that you should check out earlier Aburadako stuff although they turned into an awesome avant band eventually too.

I was going to mention Aburadako but I was trying to be concise? haha. All the stuff on ADK (this stuff got a little weirder and it was a little harder to find), all the D-Beat, Crust, and stuff like Crocodile Skink, but I had to stop. Deadless Muss, F.V.K., Real Reggae are all great bands too. Real Reggae got pretty out there on the last album they did. Execute, Mobs, Gasmask, WPCI, Don Don, Nurse, Final Count, and Paint Box are all fairly well known and liked.

Forgot to metion the Burning Spirits thing. That's kind of the Gauze split (i dont think it is that explicit though). It's it own little scene/sound. Pretty good stuff. Sometimes the GISM/Zouo side will be refered to as metal on older comps.

There is still a lot of great stuff going on there too.

I'm curious about that...(and kinda wondering if I even know some of it) (love a lot of that UK stuff...Part1, Flowers in the Dustbin, Peni, Alternative TV, the mob, zounds...I know it isn't all post punk and goth, but it borderlines, you know?). Always good to find new stuff!

there was a lot of mixing going on there in the 80s/90s with post-punk, goth, deathrock, coldwave, minimal synth, new wave, industrial, noise etc so it's a bit harder to define than the overseas scenes that they borrowed the influences from.
i haven't really bothered to map things out and group stuff and was just sifting through blogs trying out everything for a while and ended up with a metric shit-ton of stuff.

some of my favourites: Ill Bone, 黒色エレジー, Ｓｔｉｌｌ, B​árbara, Ｆｉｃｔｉｏｎ, G-Schmitt, Syoko, MANNEQUIN NEUROSE, 静香, 幻覚マイム, Takami, Noise, Jail Meating, BARDO THÖDOL, Funeral Party
my overall favourite is Pale Cocoon but they're more minimalist/experimental new wave than goth or post-punk.
there was some great stuff coming out of France and Germany in that period, too. i'm not too well versed on the UK side of things so i'll check out those you mentioned.
