so on the palisades...like Dazed says its Tubescreamer architecture...and there's about 2 settings on the voice/bandwidth that makes the pedal sound exactly like a tubescreamer. But thats where the similarities end i think. Although the overall concept is the same, the mods make the pedal go into completely new territory. I think thats when the pedal stops being a clone and being something in its own right...maybe part of the family tree...but on a far off branch.

traditionally TS are meant to be used to boost and tighten up a dirty amp (marshalls) and this pedal can do that...but interestingly, with the voice and bandwidth on the higher settings and gain on the higher settings...it becomes something closer to a high gain loose sounding distortion pedal...then you engage the boost, and it actually adds an element of fuzz to the sound...and this is on a clean amp. If you add a slight bit of dirt on the amp, it goes into all types of rediculousness!

so i think...when we say when is it a clone and when is it a new pedal...surely how far away from the original sound a pedal goes would be the measure of whether its a clone or not.

another example...quantum mystic...i believe its based on a Ross Distortion (right)...but in no youtube clip of a ross distortion have i heard the amount gain and low end that the QM has...so to me its not a clone...maybe it falls under the "Inspired by" category.

But these days i think if we want to nitpick at new pedals...99% are going to be "Inspired by". I'm pretty sure all the older companies like Boss, DOD, MXR, ProCo, EHX...etc have already made all pedals in their history and new builders try and capture some of those sounds and then add their own flavour to it...i guess the digital pedals maybe the only technically new pedals...

im seriously considering buying a compressor again...i tried to live without it for ages...but i miss the even pick attack, the fatness and the sustain...

choices are pretty limited down here...and expensive. I want to spend about $150 on second hand...any more than that i may as well buy a new EQD, Walrus or Wampler.

but the ones that are priced ok and available to me (all second hand)
- DOD 280 (new reissues)
- Xotic SP Comp
- MXR Bass Comp
- Custom Comp: I've had this before and really liked it. Low noise and nice sustain
- Dyna Comp
- Philosophers Tone (Gold): I had the black one, and could not get it to be as quiet as my Custom Comp...pretty much unuseable noise level, but it may have been a dud.

My biggest concerns are noise levels, so need a comp that doesnt add noise to my rig. I've had the custom comp and analogman bi-comp for a long time and neither one added any additional noise which i really liked. Also, I'm ok with tone coloration and character, so transparant is not really a huge consideration for me.

anyone had these or recommend these, or is there anything else that i should hold out for?

The new Dyna comp isn't so bad, but just be prepared to leave it on all the time.

I wouldn't mind trying the DAD 280 either.
But the warden keeps popping up, too....

Nick, was there talk a while back of a Dunwich optical comp one day?
Or am I misremembering?

The Wampler Ego is sick, and I don't like comps. When folks try them next to the MXR or Xotic SP, if they have the $, about 80% of the time they get the Wampler. It really has nice harmonics to it, doesn't sound muffled, bet it would be insane to stack with heavy dirt pedals. I like the Philosoper's Tone a bit too, though that's on the other end of gritty vs sparkly.

I unapologetically like The Sword, but I pretend like their last album didn't happen. Pumped for Whores though. I can imagine they will pretty quickly be known for outperforming the bands they open for.

Owning a home is awesome until it's not. Then it's dildos.

New Windhand sounds pretty rad.

Think I'm going to try to talk some fiends into a road trip. I do like frosty beverages.
We need to set up show together at some point as well. We are in the process of obtaining a vehicle that will greatly facilitate the stretching of the bands legs.

Looks like I'll be celebrating my 30th with a new guitar :doom:

Don't know what it will be, but the family told me to pick out something special to mark the occasion. I'd really like a nice Les Paul, but here's the thing - there isn't a ton of music stores around here, so there is no real way of trying them out. There is one mid-70's custom at a used spot around town, but I have a feeling they want way more than I'm willing to pay for it. I'll have a chance to swing by on my lunch tomorrow and check it out though.

I was thinking about picking up one of the Japanese customs (specifically Orville or Edwards), but don't know the best way to go about that either. What are the 'good years' for those again? Those of you who have imported from Japan, what sort of import taxes and fees were you hit with?

Advice on how to go about this is appreciated, my dudes.

Not super familiar but I don't think there are "bad" Edwards out there. maybe someone who knows better can contradict that.

Official DR™ Show afoot. If you can be in Olympia Wa. on Aug 7th, Infinite Flux and Khemmis will be meeting up and we might have a possible third DR™ band as well.

nice one!!!

personally if I could find one, I would do an old Gibson Custom LP...but if you want Japanese...i've had a great experience with my Edwards '57 Custom...built well, all the right woods, probably the smoothest playing guitar i have or have ever had. Most people say the same about Edwards too, so there has to be something to it. Alternatively you can get a Navigator which are an even better made guitar...its basically Edwards' big brother.

If you like the shape...i would also highly recommend Yamaha SG1000...they are amazing guitars!
