Also worth pointing out re the collecting stuff that if you're not a completionist sort of person they don't really impact the game at all. And if you are a completionist sort of person you're probably scurrying around enough to find everything on your own anyway.

I find more and more that I don't enjoy trying to pick up every last thing in games, just want to experience it. But yeah play the way you want to play. :idk:

Oh yeah for sure. Just seems like people who tend to play FF games aren't sticking to the main story path and usually like meandering around, but some of the FFIX stuff isn't exactly intuitive or easy to suss out... Like the Quinna frog thing, or the Fraya dragon crest thing, or Ozma, or Hades..... Yeah there's just a lot of stuff. The coins themselves get you a cool sword, but it's woefully underpowered by the time you get it and you're basically just trying to max out a skill on it so you can use it with other weapons.

Yeah exactly. I've always collected them all from being a nosy player and I've got all the cards and done... everything else except Ozma I think (tried several times and no  ). Definitely agree about the frog and dragon's crest things being unintuitive, but I've always found the game is totally beatable without grinding that stuff. Except Ozma, fuck Ozma.

Oh it's definitely beatable without all that stuff. There's just lots of cool little side quests without much hint.

I did beat Ozma. And Hades. I think I beat every optional boss and got all the summons and yada yada.... The only thing I didn't do was the 12 (or was it 10?) hour speed run to Hades to get the Ragnarok 2, because yeah no.

haha yeah no way I'm doing that. Aside from the speed run and Ozma I think I've done everything but I might be wrong. Must have played it 3 or 4 times as a kid. kind of tempted to try it again now but I just worry I'll ruin the nostalgia lol.

Makes me happy that so many other are enjoying/have enjoyed Hyper Light Drifter-

On FFIX I actually still own it on playstation (my PS2+small PSX game collection) is packed away at the moment as I'm kinda moving in with my gf, at a very slow pace, but have plans to revisit both that, FFVI and FFVII soon. FFVII being (one of) my absolute all time fave(s) I think I want to at least put a few hrs in before trying the remake. FFVI and FFIX I really enjoyed but never finished. For IX I got to Burmesia 3-4 times but always ended up taking a long break there and never pushing on for some reason. So, yeah. What I really want to say is: I like(d) this game too! :P :D

It's depressing that, on top of everything else, this virus has ruined my gaming experiences almost across the board.
Games I've been generally enjoying over the last couple of years are completely marred with server overloads and cheaters.
Unfortunately PC gaming remains a frustrating venture unless you're playing completely offline.

:(

I never play online so I don't have this problem but that sounds really frustrating

whereas the switch online is finally living up to the cost, now my mates are at home and eager to get owned by me

Re: FFIX, I'm not that much of a completionist, really. Searching every nook and/or cranny is pretty ingrained in me so I always find some sidequest stuff, and I tend to grind for a short while whenever I find a place with fun enemies that give decent exp, but optional bosses and the like have to be pretty cool for me to bother. Depends though, with both Tales of Symphonia and later Vesperia I somehow ended up doing a lot of the optional stuff by accident/exploration. So we shall see.

Anyway, it's great fun so far. I enjoy the ability-system as a sort of watered down version of the class-system from FFV. And the story got way darker than I had thought, which is good. I think I enjoy it more than VII, so far. I really liked VII, but it lacked some of that charm I loved in the three SNES games. Might also partly be me slowly adjusting to the PS1 graphics after a life of Nintendo.

Tales of Symphonia was one of my favorites. I played that game through a few times.

Any of you folks played FF 12?

It looks pretty cool and I'm considering nabbing a copy for Switch Lite. Something about handheld consoles makes retro- and indie-gaming more fun for me.

I recently replayed FF 7 on PS Vita in anticipation of the remake and hereby declare it holds up well. Even though I did not particularly like FF 15, I'm really looking forward to the new FF 7.

I cannot replay FF 6 because it's my favorite from childhood and I don't feel like ruining my rosy memories.

Pretty sure FF 6 did not have a rat ballet. It did have an octopus opera IIRC.
