There's this weird thing I've noticed where I always think gatekeeping is lame but I'm really bad at recognizing it in myself.

I dunno if it's any consolation, but I totally recognize you, and certainly don't think of you as a pleb, but as a "real deal ILFer." Seriously!

And hey, that's super cool that you're building - and that's totally the right reason to start! I hope you're posting in DIY - now I need to go check and see if you've posted clips...
Guarded and sarcastic, ain't all musicians to an extent? I gotta say it's definitely not too bad here if it seemed like I thought so.

But thank you for considering me a real one, as are you! And indeed anyone with a decent past or present uh, presence here. I appreciate you. Including the very new members.

Oh and as for clips, sorry but you won't find any, I've made a whopping two videos so far! But I'll record some more and open a demo thread eventually.

I'm sure a lot of us are like that. I know I'm protective (obviously) as well. The problem is we can't seem to discern between who is good and who is not before we chase them away. We are good at doing that, which is also a strength IMO. So not completely negative since we can band together to destroy a common evil.

Maybe the circle jerk needs to go bye bye for good. I'm ok with that too. :)

My whole thing with this thread was to re-evaluate how I personally felt about ILF and see if anyone else wanted to do the same. It's kind of an experiment and I'm happy to see so many passionate people. On the other hand, I'm sad to see some not chime in at all. Perhaps that is my fault for the thread title and the context. I dunno. I fuck up sometimes here. :)

I've started a few times, but I dunno, man. I'm an exclusivist snob and like that this forum is a bit niche. :duck:

I still love this place. I do hate that I've had to start occasionally going to TGP to get info on new pedals. It's just not right.

Cuz ILF isn't as quick with the scoop as it used to be, or something else?

Yeah just stuff that ends up not on the radar here. And less pedal focus in general. I'm not there often, but every once in a while just to make sure I'm not missing things. A good example would be the upcoming polyexpressive pedals.

Start starting threads for everything you can think of until it drowns out the modular thread is my advise :thumb:
A forum is only as good as what is talked about :idk:

The chosen thread title is not really self-explanatory. I was curious enough to click on it today because of all the replies. Not because of the title.

I get your points. All of them.

I also dislike social media and mobile devices. Up to this day I have never owned a mobile/cell phone. I solely use my wife's cheap smartphone to control my Canon PowerShot compact camera via Bluetooth to make still pics for my demo videos. All the other stuff invented for those rather tiny screens is the pure hell for me. I need my 1920x1080 pixels, a keyboard and a mouse. Touchscreens? Only cool on a KORG M3 or other synths to control the filter and other stuff in realtime. Typing texts with it? I always feel like the clumsiest man on Earth whenever I try it.

I am and I will always be a kid of the Eighties who loves the technology of the Nineties. I also still prefer CDs over mp3's. I love my Sony Discman and I listen to specific albums that I pick out before walking to the grocery stores instead of listening to some random stuff of a one-billion-songs database. So many people around me stare on their smartphones like zombies. I don't want to be like that.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram ... they can all die and I won't shed any tears over it. A forum can be a great source of information and ILF belongs to that category. The reason why I registered at ILF was that there was a thread about Seppuku pedals. I just found out about those pedals back then and there was a lot more stuff that enjoyed reading - and discussing.

There are some annoying threads at ILF (I agree with jwar that BILF is one of them), but all in all I love this place. I check the site almost every day, but I don't have much to contribute at the moment. Pedal-wise I'm more than satisfied these days.

A thing that I would like to see is a sound contest here and then. Like "do a cover of band xyz's song 'abc' with analog pedals only" or "record a modern version of a classical composition/exactly 20 year old song" or whatsoever. At a German synth forum (that I haven't visited in the last years) the guys used to do this regularly. It was a lot of fun and lots of forum members visited the threads and discussed the stuff. Maybe we can start something like that as well if enough folks are interested?

That sounds fun. I remember there was a thread about making a song based on an image, and the image was going to be updated periodically. I know I submitted something, but it died shortly after. My bad about that, I think

Cover songs would be good because it is a little less vague, you can make it as obscure as you want or just totally derivative. :thumb:

This is a cool idea! I miss the compilations that we used to put together as well.

I’d love to hear what you guys come up with, and maybe throw some stuff of my own in from time to time.
