I'd like to try writing about music, but I'm very judgemental and there are certain things I fundamentally don't like.

Isn't that the point of being a critic? Not making friends and pretending your opinions are more valid than others?

(well, I don't have to pretend)

do you find yourself reading other peoples critques? if you enjoy hearing what other people have to say about music then I think you should pursue it, but if it wouldn't be fun for you then skip it.

I couldn't do it myself because I don't think enough people would give a shit about what I have to say, if I saw myself in their shoes I probably wouldn't care about hearing myself get into my perception, but then again fantano has quite a following and he's moderately annoying.

The point of being a critic, I think, is to provide a discerning, reliable barometer of taste on a given subject for people who don't have time to listen to 100 records/watch 100 movies/ similarly dive into a cultural art form in a given work week. Validity of opinion comes from familiarity with the subject matter of criticism as well as articulation therein.

That's all true in real life as well, of course, but it's what distinguishes a real critic from, say, a Yelp reviewer.

This. Listening to music, like anything else, is experience. Problem for me is I have to cover most genres. I listen to a lot of different stuff, but when I have to write about rap for instance, I have less experience to draw on, and the result can be a bit half-assed. It is fun being exposed to stuff you normally wouldn't listen to, though.

Meh. Want to ask my wife to start a band with me again.
I tried a couple of years ago to get her back into playing bass so we could weekend warrior it but I think she was sort of intrepid about doing so because she's never done it before.
In reality she'd be fine. It'd be a fun thing to do together.

I JUST WANT TO BE IN A LADY STONER DOOM THING. WHY IS THAT IMPOSSIBLE IN THIS TOWN.

She could with some work. She has an ok voice naturally, if not an unsure/nervous one.
Again, nobody had ever taught her, nor has she ever given it a go.
It's all confidence and work over time, which go hand in hand with each other anyway.

I think it'd be fun, and it's something I've always wanted to do with her, but I can never get her riled up to agree.
She played bass just peachy when we first started going out, which was a big factor in intial attraction.
But she could totally handle the occult doom titty-core shit I want to no-brain my way through.

Could be worse, you could leave in my area where everyone only wants to do classic rock or country... or this fucking abomination:

While the music of the old sonic video games is very on point, most people that are way too into Sonic are not.

Sonic fandom and Bronies are the two things in the world that actually bother me. Like, I can't stand people that identify as them.

Despite agreeing, a kink is a kink.

I have a weird relationship with Sonic and the games, I hate everything after Advance 1 and I hate the fandom with a flaming passion, yet I can't deny that the old games were a monolithic part of my childhood. It's like seeing that one middle/high school friend that STILL wants to become a rapper, seeing him spiral down and down and down...
