Yeah, probably. I mean, Sleep making fantastic songs about weed and stuff. But it's just harder for me to see the appeal of Slipknot I guess. They're not that bad or anything, but they seem to be getting all these good reviews and have loads of fans, and I don't really "get" it. To me they seem like some ok band with some cool riffs, like alot of the other stuff that comes out every week. Maybe it's the masks. Masks are cool.

If I recall correctly, I got a taped copy of their first album and I read a blurb from Kerry King that said nice things about 'em. I mean, nowadays I just kind of think of that record as Buzzoven with DJ sounds, but of course Buzzoven are an order of magnitude less publicized.

Yeah, probably. There is a certain pop appeal to it. But I think I started at the wrong place in their discography. Listening to Iowa now, and this seems better. Remember partying to "Everything ends" back in the day. More energy or whatever. Still far from the radest stuff I've heard, but I guess if I hadn't really listened to metal this would be mind blowing.

^ same drummer dude (Yoshida Tatsuya) writes it - there's Ruins (drums/bass), Sax Ruins (drums/sax) and Ruins Alone (drums w/backing tracks). everything he does is batshit crazy, so good.
Ruins are kinda defunct and Sax Ruins only play shows in Japan but he tours a fair bit so if you ever get a chance to catch him totally do it. he barely breaks a sweat it's ridiculous

Yeah, saw Ruins alone as well as together with the bass player and guitarist from Acid Mothers Temple (SWR) a couple of months ago, one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Edit: Also, Slipknot was kinda cool live. Not my thing, but they did put on a show. Kinda overblown, but still...

Sounds about right. And getting paid to go to a show is oft. better than paying to go to one.
