For the money I'd just hunt around for old Harmony's, Kay's, Dano's, Silvertone's and the like. Y'know?

I would especially say try before you buy in Eastwood's case. Some of those guitars are...yikes.

Oh well, it should always be the first option to buy something you have tried first!
But I woudn't rule out any asian builds. I have an excellent chinese made acoustic Guild that thing kicks the asses of guitars double the price. And Japan, well, no need to talk about that. I think the country of origin does not say much about the quality of a new guitar. Older ones I wouldn't buy from that many places, but the new stuff is pretty much good from anywhere. At least if you don't try to buy for like 200$ or so. But if you're looking for a good instrument at a good price point I'd check out all the asian stuff there is.

I found that some of them were good, but way inconsistent. For the money they are charging for certain guit/bass's, I'd like a little more.

Yeah for sure. For that cash I'd just as soon go buy one of the less flashy originals. You can't usually get the original fiberglass ones for that kinda cash, but you can crush stratotones and rockets and bobkats and all of those all day long for that money.

And hell, as long as we're talking about contemporary guitars inspired by the 60's greats, these Rocket Tone guitars out of Detroit look pretty cool to me:

Any recommendation for a guitar that combine elements from a Jazzmaster with fat neck (kind of a Gibson/Fender twist)?

this precisely mirrors my experience, as well as the feedback i've seen from a number of people who've owned various Eastwoods. the ones folks seemed happiest with were the "tuxedo" Airline/Harmony Stratotone types.

somebody's making fiberglass Valco-style bodies now, so you can build your own, more authentic Airline/National etc.; once i'm back to work and have spare moneez i am SO all over this.
