Sunny Day Delay

i got my SDD a week ago. #007 ever built
sounds gorgeous and the enclosure is beautifully painted haha

i also noticed that my pedal has around 1100ms of delay time. i thought these pedals only had 500ms - think mine's had its trimpots fiddled with or something?

Back then, summer/fall 2006 when we were just getting out the first pedals, SDDs did have longer delay time. I used a 100k pot for the delay time instead of the 50k I use now. It gave a full second of delay time but unfortunately it brought out a lot of clock noise/repeat degradation that some folks just didn't like. I made the change based on customer feedback that it was too noisy.

Personally, I liked that 1 second of delay though and thought it sounded cool.. so *highfive* for digging that delay sound! *smile*

I like the lo-fi degradation of repeats, but I can understand why you didn't include it in the later SDDs. Perhaps there's a way you can include the option of having both somehow, like a toggle that switches between the two somehow. Then again if it's the pots it might not be something that easy to do.

that's awesome! i really love the grainy-ness of the repeats as they fade on those long settings. the oscillations are also fabulous.
i'm glad i have a special one haha. do the ones you make now not have the separate wet output?

Totally awesome, nightraven! There's only a few of that finish out there, very cool. I stopped doing the wet only output after probably the first 20 or so SDDs.. I decided it was maybe not an overly useful feature.. especially how it turns off when bypassed. There wasn't readily available 4PDT stomps back then, plus, I dunno, is it an important feature? Do you use it much?

sorry for the late reply - i've been away recently

i don't use the wet output right now but i can really see myself using it in the near future when i pick up a y-cable and jam my Q-Tron on the repeats
also one day i hope to be able to send the repeats to another reverb-filled amp for an awesome spacey stereo setup but i can't afford another amp haha.

i don't know how important it is but i always like having the option there for me on a delay pedal and it's cool setting up a totally wet crazy vibrato sound with the modulation. i'd say it's more of a fun feature for me!

I thought of it as a fun feature too.. something especially useful for recording maybe... maybe it'll come back in the future or at least be an option if somebody wanted. It's hard to know what features/extras are really useful or wanted by guitar players or worth the extra expense and time to incorporate into the build. Expression controls, extra ins and outs, loops, stereo... be nice to just make them all available or upgrade-able-to as for the general population it seems that just input and output is all that gets used.

And yeah, Tanya and I are huge Mighty Boosh fans, we love that show. The music, the humour, the fantastical nature.. I think it's just an excellent show that I never get tired of watching. Same for all the shows involving that little group of guys.. Darkplace, The IT Crowd, Snuff Box, Man to Man, love 'em all!

that'd be really cool actually. i know there's another company out there (i think it's 4ms pedals) that have this tick-box thing going on where you specify what you want and don't want on your pedal to build this super custom pedal. but i don't know how this would work with the dealer thing i hear going on where you can't order direct from you. i dunno haha.
but a dr scientist custom shop sounds awesome :D

lol, the delay is now at my home in china.....with the knob changed and looks even better.
a long history pedal now............since 2006 oct...
yeah, the noise is obvious when the delay time is longer, to be honest i am not digging that...
the self oscalation is nice, but when the delay mix is high, some time it does not oscalate...
and the modulation is not obvious when the delay range is over 300ms something.

but the i am happy about the historical pedal! a dark delay for sure that being on board with a dd20.

Those first SDDs sure had some eccentricities..pretty big quirks really... ultimately there's no way to get a second out of a single PT2399 without a ton of noise and distortion... I should have pitched the first version as a 'noise' delay.. turn those negatives into a positive! *smile*

The problem with the modulation is that when the delay is fast, the modulation isn't as fast, and so it kind of goes away... geeez that first version needed some overhaulings...

Totally! I was really bad at critically listening to my pedals back in 2005.. I used my amp wrong, used a really dark guitar, didn't thoroughly and critically listen for noises and quirks.. had to learn some of that stuff the hard way, through complaints..

Likewise duder. Made me realize I need to have every possible different configuration of everything just to try to test things and make them OK to use for everyone! haha
