Just did a quick comparison with similar settings.

I was totally wrong about the loud part. Haha.

DN has way less gain and/or volume. IN/OUT maxed on the DN is about equal in volume to 11ok IN/OUT on the CLANG. Despite the volume similarities, the CLANG had a bit more saturated sustain. Overall, the DN is more gated. The DN had more bass but more gated-ness along with it. The treble is much more extreme on the CLANG. The CLANG is just an overall more “full” sounding pedal with more sustain. They have different different attacks too (in a good way).

I feel like CLANG is easier to get along with because the gain/sustain is more forgiving (some of the shorter sustain tones on the DN can be rather dull sounding to my ears and I don’t use enough of a pedal chain to cover it up, nor the talent).

Modes one and three on the thick switch seem most like the DN (switch all the way to the top seems closest, havent look). Middle selection is way different and I havent check it out too much.

Really happy with it! It’s an evolution all the way around and I really think the differences are an improvement. Good job Dino and Ianmarks on the changes and component swap/workarounds! Turned out excellent!

Thanks so much for leaving this here. It really made my Holiday! So the switch controls the gain in the high section. Up is high, center is low, and bottom is higher. Without Digi2t's mod, it would have been a smidge more gainy than that center position, which from your description, sounds like it would NOT have sufficed! Just for clarification, the toggle center position represents the stock DN circuit. What the toggle upper and lower positions are doing is "crossing the streams", which in this case is a good thing. If you look at the schematic at the end of the Dilligaf build doc, you'll see the Thick switch (SW2) smack dab between the Low (upper section) and High (lower section) circuits. Like I said before, the center position is essentially as if the switch wasn't there at all. In this case, the difference between the Dilli and the DN come down to transistor selection, cap composition, and biasing of the reversed transistors in the high side. After that, the toggle is adding low frequency content from the low side to the high side. Toggle up is mild, toggle down is wild. It not only ups the low end frequency content in the high side, but the overall gain of the high side as well.

All in all.... a happy accident.

They really did a great job on this pedal.

I'm finding my experience with Clang so far to be more rewarding than my memories of the Driving Notion. It's more extreme but also more forgiving (echoing lordgalvar). The thick switch is a home run. Honestly it's like the Clang is what I wanted the Driving Notion to be. That's not to diminish the DN by any means, just my personal preference. If the Driving Notion was The Terminator then Clang is Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Anyway here's a brief clip of the new Algal Bloom and then the Bloom going into the Clang and holding the chord to let it decay (thick switch in the middle).

I spent a little time with it and at first I was worried that there was some weird clipping distortion happening but then I realized I just had the output too high and it was affecting pedals downstream. This thing is loud.
After playing for a while, my ears were very fatigued. All the other gain pedals I had set to taste sounded muffled and dull. The high is no joke.
It's a delight.
