Heads up if you like hiking, Warren Wilson College over in Swannanoa has a lot of trails open to the public, and it's only a 20 minute drive out of downtown. Also, theres the Root Bar in Swannanoa, which has their own game called rRoot Ball, which is like Bocce and Horseshoes combined. Books, Malaprops is cool. Pizza, Mellow Mushroom. Music gear, Heyday Music, and you might get a chance to meet Greg Oblivian. Static Age has plenty of good records. Also, back on WWC, they have weekly contra dances, a drag show and a circus, and a clothing sale, all open to the public, plus the swannanoa gathering.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips! Do you live around the area? I'm pretty excited for a change from living around Boston my whole life since I'm priced out now anyway.
On my last trip down I went into Heyday to check it out randomly and got to meet Greg Oblivian. He was such a nice guy and fun to chat with. I'm always amazed with how friendly and chatty almost everyone is when I leave the north east haha.

Feel you on that, I still remember when I first went up to NYC and learned it's a bit of a faux pas to ask the convience store clerk how they're doing today. That weird look haunts me to this day. But no, used to go to school at WWC, and then lived in Swannanoa for a few months after, but if you're ever in the Knoxville area over the hill (about a 2 hour drive), feel free to holler.

I'm leaving for South Korea soon, god willing, and I finally got my boss to consent to what I've been figting for 2 and a half years: letting me write and host questions for a trivia game. I am pretty damn excited.

Asheville has a great rep up here in Charlottesville. the outdoors-enthusiast culture is strong there. i've only been there once, but quite liked it and want to spend some time in the mountains around there.

The day after tomorrow I fly back to the US for the first time in roughly nine months. It’s intimidating, but I’m really excited to talk with people who are friends instead of coworkers.

This sounds kind of mundane, but I finally got the hang of making longer rip cuts using a Japanese pull saw. It's very frustrating when you get a decent line going and then it just curves off and turns to shit. It's way more difficult than it sounds to cut a straight line with a hand saw
You have to cut at a very shallow angle, not perpendicular. That's the magic trick. It's way faster that way, too. I couldn't figure out why people on forums were able to so it so quickly.
