What typically passes for "feminism" in a blockbuster hollywood action movie is simply putting a woman in the traditional role of male heroism.
This film is at least a step more thoughtful than that. When we're rooting for hot shot pilot guy (who has already been shown to be a reckless moron) to pull off yet another macho male stunt, and thinking the woman is a bitch, we're doing exactly what the film wants. It's asking us to examine these feelings. In and of itself, this isn't revolutionary or anything, but for a Star Wars film, Disney's precious billion dollar franchise...it's a step forward.

Commence ex-video-rental-store-dude skepticynicism!
The Last Jedi. Yeah, right. There will prob be a half dozen more in the next decade
I waited until TFA was free on-demand and glad I did. After its opening sequence the movie dragged for me, while I kept waiting for it to unfold and gel. It left me feeling like the entire thing was a disjointed, barely coherent sequence of amorphous scenes stocked with marketing department *researched* how-to pandering. I have yet to see Rogue One as a result, with no immediate plans to do so, and that would have gone for TLJ as well....if not for the polarizing discussion [often contradictory within a single individual's review or opinion] being so intriguing and ramping up to 11.
Are spoilers really needed for the film to tip its hand?
A lot of contention seems to center around this:

It's not so much a Star Wars film as it is a critique of Star Wars.
I suspect a better-written, (and executed) timeless critique of Star Wars has existed for 30+ years in Mel Brooks'
Spaceballs

Sure, in a bigger military body, yes. in this galaxy there's basically 200 people. He's the best fighter they have. I don't think so.
Also the 'stupid shit' he pulled ended up killing a star destroyer. He should get demoted for not following direct orders, but that's pretty big, and it seemed to me like the price was right, even though nobody liked that people died.
I'm not too "learn't" on the lore, but I got the impression she came from a more militant background? I don't know, it seemed like a realistic response to a hot headed character. If it went the other way I still probably would've liked the movie.
As to stupid shit, I consider it stupid because it dwindled numbers, and I'd reckon to guess Leia's goal was to save as many people as possible. But hey maybe they saved on fuel running away later on.

It never stopped to breathe, ever, and like you said, simply the next sequence of things barely gets handled until the next after that starts.
Yeah the pacing in TFA is rapid, yet a hinderance on itself like some caffeinated pillhead trying to explain a complicated anecdote regarding a topic of (former) extreme personal interest, but now they're *over it*. Like it physically drags you along, only pausing to pivot and change direction without ever really arriving at a destination of purpose.
At every turn it's like "yeah how about THAT!? OHHHHHHHHHHHHH YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS [half dozen fire and praying hands emoji] nah that was actually lame BUT WHOA LOOK AT THIS" before spinning some more plates.
I found it distracting, like when it was over my immediate impression was feeling like things could have been condensed into 25min and I'd have been no less informed of the plot.

Saw TLJ today. Couple things I wasn't too crazy about but for the most part liked it a lot better than TFA. Like it the same or a little better than Rogue One. I went in with low expectations so that helps!! It was entertaining, yes I can see how some people might not like parts of it but you can't please everybody when dealing with Star Wars. World wide box office has topped 1B. Disney is doing okay for itself these days and a few pissed off fans isn't going to rain on their parade, lol.

Unfortunately this.
Money isn’t quality. And ‘can’t satisfy everyone’ doesn’t justify obvious plot holes and throwaway sub-plots.
Rewatched ‘rogue one’ and it’s by far the best Star Wars movie since the original trilogy came out, if not only for the consistent tone and the pacing.
I've tried to rematch it 3 times.. it puts me to sleep.

Well yeah! I mean how can that movie compare to the hilarity of a lecture on slime molds.
