It's pretty standard web 2.0 evolution. Everything is marketing. When one particular technique can be proven to garner more clicks, it will be doubled up, copied, leaned on, exploded, mainstreamed and force fed until it is utterly hated. Unless the overall IQ of the population drops and it becomes acceptable, like Storage Wars.popvulture wrote:Whenever I see those shitty clickbait faces in my YT suggested vids, I usually just click "do not suggest channel." to present us with merch to match our predilections. The center cannot hold with
endless side-hustle and mutual hoodwinkery. A music scene or system that doesn't support
its participants is unsustainable. Financing is available to purchase music gear, but what
happens when even musicians don't want to or can't pay to listen to music?
The mugging faces I think are meant to humanize the shill and distract from what's
going on behind the curtain between corporate versions of The Wizard of Oz and Dr. Oz.
Who serves the servers? We all do. Not just the content of searches, but the frequency of clicks
send the money to boycott-proof AWS.
NAMM sometimes is exciting and sometimes just feels like the nom-nom-nom of consumption.
With music/art/writing, everything is influenced by something else. But ideally there is
time for digesting and metabolizing influences, thereby avoiding a human centipede aspect
of modern culture where influencers and influenced engage in mutual regurgitation.

I've overseen social media marketing as part of my work life for the last few years. For videos that have a thumbnail preview, you see a significant uptick in views based on a face with an exaggerated expression in the thumbnail.
Whether that person is a shill, I guess depends on what they do in the video or the events surrounding its development, but algorithms kind of cyclically promote videos with a lot of engagement, and one way to drive engagement is to use the face as its own sort of clickbait.

They’re just copying what works for the biggest YouTubers on the platform, without realizing that most of their audiences are about 10-15 — That’s what market-logic gets you, absurditypopvulture wrote:Whenever I see those shitty clickbait faces in my YT suggested vids, I usually just click "do not suggest channel." I do think that the weird-face covers are sort of frustratingly broad-spectrum effective. Like, there have certainly been times when even cynical me is like "ok what is this shit?" and I give it a look out of morbid curiosity. Of course the video rarely has much correlation with the garbage bait.

I trust what people say here as apposed to other places because we buy and talk about products that are rad because we can think in terms of all of the cool shit we can do with them.
I mean we all don't have to own a klon to be apart of the group right?
Or do we?!?!?

JSYK gear talk forum chain of command/league of influence (from Neanderthal to Metroid) is as follows:
TPDRI -> Talkbass -> TGP -> Gearslutz -> Muffwiggler -> ILF 2001-05 -> OffsetGuitars -> Electrical Audio's Traynor Thread -> Lines' pictures of our soundmaking machines thread -> ILF 2005-present -> ILoveDoom

I won't listen to Josh Scott wank off on guitar. By default, this has to be somewhat better. It reminds me of the TWA Dynamorph, which I already have, so my curiosity is limited. I'd like to hear this with other pedals, or in the FX loop of a delay.

^ that wasn't too bad. I was interested in this as a MicroSynth-alike for the Helios Creed sound, but since I foolishly watched the JHS demo I can't look at the damn thing anymore without that creepy dude's face popping into my head
